Comparation: average salary...

That actually makes me sad inside :(

The GBP has dropped so much against the major currencies that its become a joke, really makes you want to move to a different country.

Back on topic, yes pay is higher in Swizterland, but is veryyyy expensive, a lot more then the UK anyway, UK is actually cheaper then most, if not ALL western european countries! This again makes me sad (lol) as prices have increased so much recently, but we are still cheaper...makes you think how cheap we had it when prices were lower!

Yes and no. It's peaks and troughs. If you go back earlier than 2007 you will find periods where the sterling was even less Swiss Francs than it is now.

I used to live in Switzerland for a year. I would go back there in a heatbeat but it is way more expensive than the UK. Plus it annoys me that Swiss pay half as much tax as foreigners. Still, my quality of life was much better I believe. I was offered a job back there but got another offer, which I took. Upon reflection I kind of regret it :o

Less direct taxation but you do have other things to pay. For example you have £250 per month to pay for complusory health cover which only covers you for a certain amount of treatment per year. Any cost over that excess and you have to pay 10% of the cost. We get the NHS free.

Old age and retirement contributions are 12.1% of salary but yes, the taxation rate is low but does vary but in can be as low as 10% with 30% been the max depending where you live.

I know your post is said in jest, but I'd consider looking at Switzerland's laws and general culture. They're very strict on some things and are hardly renound as the most exciting nation (no disrespect meant).

Not entirely true;)

I've lived in Switzerland for 3 years (1 in Geneva, 2 in Zurich). Yes, they do have some weird 'laws' and a unique culture. But we never found ourselves on the wrong side of it. The Swiss are a welcoming and friendly bunch, infinitely more than your average Londoner! It's an absolutely beautiful country too, I would drop everything in a heartbeat to go back and live there.

/doesn't work for Swiss tourist board...

I knew when I went to Switzerland prices were high but I was still take by surprise at some of the costs.

A lot of your typically daily items were twice as expensive as in the UK.

If you like junk then you'd be paying over double for a McDonalds meal.

The 'opinion' is a copy and paste essay.

cumulus, are you doing research?

If so, firstly, the conception that the outside world see the Swiss as "pure, punctual, and precise" is archaic and incorrect.

Add in clocks, mountains and chocolate and that was my view :)

Oh, and a red footy kit.

Out of my circle of friends Id say the average is about £1,200 permonth after tax... from people that have degrees etc. Some are still on under a £1000 and a few are on almost £3000 after tax.

I think my view was skewed when a mate of mine moved there when he was 18 (due to his parents). He saw the appeal of it (nice people, lovely scenery, etc) but found it a tad boring. Maybe that was just where he was located and that he was away from his friends.

where did you get this health issurance from

i paid £50 a month when i lived in switzerland now i pay this every bloody week  (ok i had an excess of £3k :) )

also about the foreign people paying more tax that depends reallyi actually paid less then everyone else on the same salary but when i had a bonus i lost like 50% of it lol

but saying workwise i do miss switzerland since you'll find a job quite easy and it will pay you quite decent especially if you work in the Zurich area which seems to pay 10% more than everywhere else.

All seem to suggest an average cost of 350 CHF per month. 1.4 ish CHF to the pound and you get £250 per month (although the state pays for some of it for low income people)

weird but then again it depends where you live
also seems they've changed the excess limit since mine was higher than 2,5k chf :D

just had a recalculation with google and thats what i paid every month

only real problem is (which im not sure if this law still exists) is that when you have an operation you have to pay 25%, i believe it was(or might was 10k CHF), yourself. which kinda can screw you over if you don't have the cash

125 Swiss francs = 83.3759158 British pounds

which isnt too bad i think :)
