Strangely enough, I know this is quite shocking, but the Dons aren't 24x7, they're just ordinary volunteers doing work in their spare time. he posted this thread at half midnight, and no doubt will start answering questions raised when he's next able to.

Jeez.. give the guy some chance to be human and not stuck in front of a computer 24x7.

It's not really just this thread but it's a regular trend for the dons here to "delay" or even totally ignore questions raised most of the time - you'd see what I mean if you were to read previous posts and threads about such issues in the past.

That's not quite the point I was raising. As we are all adults, one can assume that the Mods and Dons are not robots, tied to their PC's. However, in such a discussion it would be nice to have some input from those that initially felt the need to raise the issue.

It's obviously an important issue on the part of Ocuk.

From what I can gather, this is a continuing issue that has been raised before... As I am new to the forum, I have not been privvy to those previous discussions, and thereby felt the need to raise the point I made.

A lot of these queries go back to the Speak Easy for discussion amongst the moderators; trying to ensure a fair and accurate answer comes back that reflects the policy of the forums. Despite what others may think this happens on a number of different things like suspensions and bans, there are very very few "instaban" worthy actions on their list.

Of course if you really want to see a move to fascist dons operating purely by their own whim that could always be cut down...

bah didn't see the 2 mice on there and 3 cables.

Still, why would those 5 or so products be substantial enough for us not to be allowed to mention game.net

Anyway I'm not too fussed

There's two pages of stuff that alternatives to are sold on OCUK, they also have nearly 4 pages of mp3 players, which are also sold here.

As a rule of thumb, if it looks like it sells a lot of hardware, then it'll likely be a competitor. Most places are common sense, some a little grey such as Game.net. Things like the latter, they don't sell enough stuff to be classed as a competitor I belive, you're okay with posting games related stuff, but if you go posting hardware links for cheaper motherboards for example in the motherboard forum, then you'll get the post deleted.

It really isn't that hard, and it's not as easy as fully starring out terms. Say ******** was a competitor, if somebody were to post a link for it, it would become www.********.net. If we have then a conversation about how good the gameplay of a game is, we lose the right to post that word, and makes thigs rather annoying. Same with many of the competitors you can probably think of.

If you are really not sure about if a certain site is going to be iffy, then find a mod or myself on MSN/E-Mail and ask, don't post it straight away. I'm online most evenings, as are a lot of dons, and can quickly say yay or nay to things.

It's not as simple as giving a list of okay sites, as there are hundreds, of them out there, and people would be scared to post minor obscure sites due to them not being on a said list.

The funniest posts are the ones that hint to the competitor using slang or some similar word, obviously the person posting it knows its not allowed but still tries anyway, makes me laugh anyway :D

Boss: "You aren't allowed any sweets"
...

What about the green ones, they're not even that nice anyway!

How about these pink ones - they're low sugar, I won't have too many...

Can I have the yellow ones though? I know they're sweets but I really like them!

And just who the heck are you to say I cant have any sweets?

Oh... oh wait. You're the person paying for these forums that I use an awful lot without ever saying thanks... in fact, instead of agreeing to your rules and saying 'thanks' I think I'll tell you how rubbish your rules are, how unfair I think you are, and throw a tantrum like the spoilt brat that I am. /kevin.

It's all getting a little heated!

How about we all collectivly thank Ocuk, accept the rules, and crak on with some gaming chatter!
But people couldn't moan then!

Yeah but if you can save someone a fair bit of money getting a game from somewhere then its worth the risk IMO ;).

Hardware or anything OCUK sell is a different matter entirely.

rules are in place
you have already agreed to these when signing up
act responsible and adhere to them
dont moan at the Mods who are enforcing them

simple

The way i see it is :-
Either

All competitors or allowed or no mention of any game/hardware shop selling anything remotely similar to ocuk. No exceptions or allowances. Just everyone kinows and there's no arguments over so and so sells this and ocuk doesn't so it's ok. Stops the don's getting annoyed, and stops people getting banned for silly competitor mentions.

Scared of competition are we?
The rule has been here a long time, nothing wrong with it. If you owned such a business and a forum to go along with it, you probably wouldn't want the forum being used to advertise other peoples stores.

There's a difference advertising or pointing out elseware is cheaper, and mentioning a business pretty much everyone knows. ie I just bought a cable from ******** company.

Again, it's still Spie's decision. It's hardly the end of the world that you can't say certain things.

But it's blooming annoying. For example someone asks for a desk and where to get one, oops can't mention a high street furniture store because they also sell PC/car cleaning products. So we have to reply "it's a jerker but we can't say where we can get it" that's really helpful to the OP isn't it? Or someone gives recommendation for power tools or spotted bargains, again can't mention "W" shop, "H" etc etc.

Just like the labour party they are in power and you can't touch them , not unless u have an all out riot... but then you will get arrested for disturbing the peace
