Concerned about the state of PC gaming

I've been thinking lately, it seems PC gaming is in a bad way. Releases seem to be slower than ever, fewer excellant games seem to be coming out and the excellant ones are usually on the conosles anyway. a lot of dosh is required to build a rig that can achiece the same visuals as the current gen consoles, the amount of techical problems seems to be fair greater and overall popularity just seems to be in decline. I've been a PC gamer all my life but I am just frustrated with the slow releases and waiting ages for excellant games. Dare I say I've even been tempted to get a 360.

What opinions do you guys have on this subject?

i've already tried a 360 and I don't like gaming on a gamepad and peer-to-peer gaming is also farely lame when your used to 64 player dedicated servers.

PC gamers need a new fps multiplayer to knock HL2/CSS off it's pedestal

After hearing about Rockstar making GTA 1 and 2 available for free download i got them today. Very nostalgic playing through GTA2, loads of fun.

Though havent worked out how to save the game, lol, so just going round doin a few jobs and generally causing a bit of mayhem.

Last year weren't bad for PC gaming with truly great games such as BioShock and COD4 released (albeit both were also on consoles but FPS gaming is much better on the PC) and obviously the game to upgrade your rig for, Cysis was released but I can agree with you about the here and now....

I look at what's to be released this year and there's nothing that even remotely interests me and certainly nothing to make me want to upgrade my rig further to one of the all new GPU's that are to be released any month now.

It's console gaming for me in 2008 I'm afraid.

I gave up PC gaming a year or so back, I enjoy my 360 more than I ever did gaming on my PC, I mean playing GTA4 on my 50' Plasma feels so good :D the reason I gave the game up is due to the costs of maintain a gaming PC like upgrading GPU etc to a games console and IMO there is a vastly superior range of game titles on the 360.

Face facts people PC gaming is dying out, Consoles have become much more powerful than there predecessors and they now sport online gaming. Piracy isn't to blame either it really is down to the fact more people buy games for consoles, Yes there are many PC owners but most stick with games like WoW and CSS and don't bother buying new games.

I have every console (except Wii) available and i also have 2 high end PC's (so not a fanboy!) And i can honestly see PC gaming fading out. Soon gamers will be sticking with consoles and just having a Laptop for CSS, WoW, Internet and computer stuff.

I don't mind this scenario as it will save me money (no more £300+ video cards) but i just wish keyboard and mouse would be adopted by consoles. And i would prefer proper online gaming like PC and PS3 not 360 P2P rubbish.

pc games will not die out just the genres will die out. With MMORPG more popular than ever(tho im no fan tbh) also most FPS will always come out for PC as the online play is much better. Consoles are better for offline play but PC will always be beter for online IMO

I don't think that's true. For the most of the last decade people have been saying that point 'n' clicks are on their way out but they're still here.

they are?! lol honestly i thought they were dead, last one i heard about and own is the moment of silence:o

However Driving games I feel are slowly disappearing from PC, I will be quite suprised if they release GTA4 on PC(tho I hope they do)

Well in terms of driving games we currently have Rfactor and LFS with their endless mods to keep things fresh, Race series by Simbin as well as GTR. Not to forget an old but still excellent RBR.

The latest announcement from Crytek and the thread about GTA4 on the PC is a good example of the decline of PC gaming.

I myself started out as a PC gamer many moons ago and only started playing console games with the N64. Slowly we are seeing PC gaming becoming a niche market rather than mainstream, where users must have the latest technology in order to play games at good framerates and maximum detail.

But the PC gamer base as a whole must realise that they are part of the problem along with lazy developers and overbearing distributers.

There's quite a few pc exclusives as neoboy says - also trackmania.

Anyway, I bought 360 a couple of weeks ago. I just got bored of waiting for things to be released on the PC I guess. Difficult to say how much I'm going to use the pc for games now. It's weird how far away it feels from pc gaming now. So much easier just to play the game, I do miss playing ut3 but I can't be bothered with all the baggage that the pc brings.

The main down-side is that game modding is somewhat difficult on a console. Hopefully microsoft will be allowing mutators in a decent form for ut3 on 360. Definitely won't bother buying it again otherwise

But the PC gamer base as a whole must realise that they are part of the problem along with lazy developers and overbearing distributers.

that's too big a statement not to have an explanation :p

i guess you're talking about piracy?

I agree its in massive decline, it will never truly die out though there will always be niche developers for any platform.

The main thing though is that PC gaming dying out isn't as bad as it sounds these days as consoles can do almost everything a PC can now. With the exception of WoW consoles are where the moneys at. Aside from all the business reasons (large user base, no hassle install, standard specs etc) consoles have come along way and now have a maturing market which has lead to more complex pc like games that in previous years would never have seen the light of day on a console.

Take a look into any game shop now, PC has been marginalized and as hard as it is for me to admit being a former PC exclusive player.. with good reason.

Right so, with the exception of a PC game, consoles are where the moneys at... so any PC success story has to be set aside for that arguement to work? Even holding it aside this isn't true, everyone points to money as the sole reason of console > pc development which is just balls. First of all, developers are moving to multiplatform, not abandoning the PC.. secondly if they were really wanting to just make money above all else, which of the following do you think they would opt for:
a) Spend 4-5 years with a large team, grinding daily to produce a game that won't even meet their own expectations and wouldn't have done if they had twice as long to develop it, costing millions in the process.
b) Get one programmer who can bang out a few things in photoshop if needed to spend one weekend making some mobile phone game or cheap PC puzzle game and earning as much if not more than any AAA title ever would.

The reason the PC section in shops has diminished isn't because there aren't as many games for the PC being made anymore or not as many people are buying them... there are more games being made and more people buying them for PC than ever before. But between content delivery systems and online retailers... the high street is what is losing the battle, not the PC platform.

I can't understand the original post. Over christmas we had Bioshock, Orange Box, Crysis, COD4, UT3 - all massive amazing games. This year are AoC, WAR, Far Cry 2, Mass Effect (improved version), Fallout 3, Spore, Starcraft 2, Left 4 Dead, Huxley, Empire: Total War, Dragon Age... I've probably missed out quite a few. These are all big games coming out on the pc.

People have been saying this for years though. I suspect the PC games market isn't any smaller than it was 15 years ago.

I think this is in part due to the large number of consoles out there all with their own shelf space, coupled with high street stores now having a 'used' section which used to be the domain of small independents. In the old days it was basically just SEGA and Nintendo, but now we've got major 3 players in the console market, together with mainstream handhelds. Also with PC games moving to the 'dvd style' packaging, each game takes up less shelf space than it used to.

The main thing though is that PC gaming dying out isn't as bad as it sounds these days as consoles can do almost everything a PC can now.

There will 'always' be a niche market for pc gaming as the hardcore enthusiasts still find things lacking in consoles (framerate, control system, modding community, legacy support, graphical fidelity...) Of course, publishers prefer mass market appeal to niche markets so for sure, we may get a more limited range of games in future. I can live without The Sims 43 Extreme Edition though.
