Windows 8 load startup programs a hell of a lot slower than windows 7, so IMO windows 7 is faster on boot. Windows 8 loads up the start screen quick but only because it has not bothered to boot up the start programs with any speed.

I'm sitting there a good 20 seconds longer in windows 8 for avast and the Logitech gaming software to load as well as other programs.

I kinda agree with what hes saying, I still run 7 on my rig at home but 8 on my Pro.
Any machine we get here at work that comes with 8 on gets reinstalled, and I suggest anyone else do the same on any non-touch device.
Will 8.1 and the boot to desktop solve things, to an extent perhaps, as long as you can tell the OS to ignore Metro (yes i know its not called that anymore but still) and not launch any Metro apps unless specifically told to, when you boot in desktop mode there should be some sort of default override for apps, depending on where they were launched from...

I use windows 8 on my desktop and have no issues at all? In fact it's faster than windows 7 once you understand the features of it. Open any app with two button press.
When will people learn the start menu is just a super, start button?

Anyone not use the windows key on your keyboard? Simple

Don't have that here Samsung EVO ssd. Boot up is around 21 secs fully loaded apps ect

I'm on an samsung 830 and yes W7 does load up the startup programs faster than W8. I just installed the 8.1 RTM and used the boot to desktop option and it's obviously slower than W7, most likely to the fact it has to load up the start screen and apps first.

I'm on an 840 Pro and can defo say its faster! Maybe there's an app in startup slowing yours down?

With UEFI booting enabled - it gets through BIOS post quicker too, so literally flies to the desktop!

A fresh install with no apps installed, yes it can fly to desktop but you're left waiting for programmes to load in to memory, that's if you have any programmes load on startup.

With the default apps, can't you just uninstall the metro apps? Ie. Photos, Videos, Reader etc. Just a right click and uninstall on their tiles. Haven't had any problems my end after uninstalling the obvious.

My system that once ran Win7 boots up to a fully useable desktop in around half the time now it runs 8.
Is that down to a clean OS install Vs an old one? Unlikely, my Win8 install is now considered "old" (from when I installed it on launch day) and it still boots faster than my Win7 ever did.

Yes you can, I was thinking from a personal POV as I have a Pro that I use at work, plugged into a Lenovo USB3 Dock, monitor etc.
I never use Metro at work its always desktop, so for me a double headed approach would work better...

My desktop is usable after boot, it's the programmes that take longer to load in W8, and my system runs perfectly.
i have fast boot disabled and tbh win8 still boots slightly faster than win7, once win8 is at the start screen and i click desktop all the programmes are loaded within a few seconds.

i have 1 negative about win8 that is fast boot.

I have about 6 that start-up boot is 21secs from button to me opening chrome. Windows 7 used to be 30-40 secs

^download the leaked ISOs. they've been out for sometime now. it's confirmed the SHA-1 hashes match the genuine MSDN release so that means they are untouched.
