Conform to our society, says PM

I like him more now than I ever have done, even when he stood firm with the war on Iraq.

I'm very very dispointed at the out come of this thread, everybody on here commended Australian PM John Howard for making that profound speech, now when Tony Blair trys to do a simular act nobody seems to give a hoot and we all just end up augueing over that stupid "Thats Racist" Anitmated gif which frankly I'm getting tired of as well. That's typical english though, we moan and moan and moan about something and when we get a step in the right direction nobody cares, instead we go off and try and find something else to moan about, becuase we are a nation of moaners.

Well, call me cynical, but it would be better received if Blair had followed through on one promise he's been forced to make due to public opinion.

But he doesn't. He speaks the words, then totally forgets about the action part. Over and over again. Whatever's best for Tony & his votes, sod the rest of us. He's said this. Now he'll do nothing to follow through with it, at the most he'll set up a few commitees of his friends to recommend things that will never happen in a million.

How do I emmigrate to Oz again? :)

I agree.

When John Howard said it half the forum turned up to congratulate him, wish our PM would say the same and **** off our government for not saying it.
Now our PM says the same thing and we get a thread full of spam and no-one seems to care.

Thats true, but i don't think John Howard had done much at the time of that thread.

I'm no fan of the labour government but you can't congratulate one government for doing it right and then ignore it when your government does the same.

I am of course joking around. I agree totally with the jist of Blairs statement. In practice though it's a bit crap, because he's spent the last 8-9 years blarting about political correctness. A change from Blair doesn't make much difference. What we need is a swift change, Out with Blair + Labour. The only reason I say this is (in relation to this topic!) because it's far too late in the day for Labour to be changing stance on conformity to British tradition etc. Best we just start afresh now.

Its all very well saying that, but do you really think the conservatives would be any better?

Labour is the best we've got imo, much as i hate them.

I don't think that the Conservatives would do a much better job no. Personally I vote Lib Dem.

I would too but the probability of them getting into power is very small, some of their policies are unworkable and since Kennedy stepped down as leader i find them incredibly boring and frankly unelectable.

Which is a shame because we do need a 'real alternative'.

Quite why he feels the need to mock what he calls the liberal do-gooding PC brigade when nobody had even said that what Blair said was racist is beyond me. He does it in every single race-related thread too so I can only assume that he is trolling for a reaction.

As for this statement, it is good in principle but I find it quite vague and, being as cynical as I am, I think it is just an attempt to grab votes and restore the repuation of a party that had been in decline for years. Not that the Tories would be any better of course.

Getting back on topic...

The Muslim Association of Britain said Mr Blair's speech was "alarming".

This is what really annoys me. Why does the MA try and disrupt relations in this way? Blair's speech was aimed at all communities and only targeted extremist Muslims. It is therefore only alarming if you are an extremist.

The idea of the speech was that people need to be respectful of others in the way that they want to be respected themselves. It was not a threat and the MA should encourage a healthy relationship of respect in diverse cultures living in close proximity.

It's like the other time when Blair called on the help of the Muslim society to prevent extremism. They wanted to take no responsibility and only criticised the UK's foreign policy in Iraq.

In all fairness though, the MCB and MA aren't really representative of Muslims, they are more representative of Islamists (Muslims who wish to pursue Islamic politics) and personally I think they are hating vipers who the government have given power to by attempting to 'engage' them being unable to see the difference between general Muslims and their ilk.

I have to agree. The MA and the MCB give a bad name to Muslims as a whole with their constant whining and headline generating, opposing all things that aren't Islamic and proclaiming that they are angry and its unjust. But the media and the government pander to them.

Although any organisation including the MA which condemns this speech is immediately labelling itself as anti British and refusing to integrate or even care about the British way of life. Alarming ehh. Should be more like a wakeup call.

I wonder if the government will still pay such close attention to them now?

I'd rather have the muslim association of Britain any day of the week rather than the bnp.
