Confused about maximum speed

Virgin provide a free cable modem. You'll have to fork out for a router though to share the connection, or use ICS (internet connection sharing) on a host computer.

You might want to check directly with Be about the ADSL speed.

It'll almost certainly be 1km in a straight line from the exchange, rather than the actual route your line follows.
Which checker was it?

It might, there's no way of knowing - and any estimate of what speed you'd get would be a complete guess.

I would personally avoid getting cable at the moment, mainly because of the utter mess that VM is in as a company, and their traffic shaping policies are pretty stingy too.

And yes you could use both of those devices quite happily together with no problems.

Cable Modem -> Router WAN Port then a patch cable between the rotuers switch and the external switch.

Get cable. Virgin 20mb will be 20mb regardless of your distance from the exchange.

Now people may be put of by traffic shapping BUT this means that the VM service is always nice and nippy for most and to be fair most ADSL companies enforce worse limits

The virgin one dosent charge you for going over, just caps your line at half speed for 4 hours which isn't that bad tbh. and only applies 4pm-midnight. also if your on 20mb thats still 3gb @ full speed before it comes into force

Yeah you will mate, but beyond that you are free to attach it to a router of your choosing

WRT54GL is what i use. 10/10 from me. lovely bit of kit.

What the router? yes it is. pretty much plug and play.

Cable, honestly hand on heart as internet goes i can't find any disadvantage other than the speed cap thing, but then again your probably gonna find that no matter where you go.

Only being able to get a (single) dynamic IP (with the rDNS fixed) might count as a disadvantage, but I suppose it depends what you're looking for.
