Confusing films

My favourite of this genre is the sci-fi film 'Primer'
Its the only film i watched that required me to take notes afterwards to work it all out. If anyone wants to watch it i recommend you don't google it first, cos it'll spoil it.

Why is it pointless though? It doesn't have to have an obvious and easy to follow storyline or plot for it to be worth your viewing does it? Films are a form of art, if you don't appreciate or understand it on the same level that someone else does then fair enough, but it doesn't make it pointless just because it confused you.

I watched it once and it just doesn't do anything for *me* I appreciate lots of other people might like it though and I believe it got a fairly good score on http://www.imdb.com/ ? Yes Films are a form of art and I'm glad you liked it, we don't all like the same type of art though. Read what I said again, I just said *for me* ... Eraserhead was pointless, and I stand by that remark and qualified it with an IMHO at the end.

Eraserhead is a very good horror film, and by your own admission it worked with you too. It might not have monsters or ghosts jumping out or people having their heads hacked off but it certainly made you and me feel uncomfortable watching it - job done.

LOL. I don't like slasher movies either, not because they are scary or anything ... I do like a good horror film and appreciate the horror classics like The Exorcist, The Haunting or maybe even Salem's Lot? Honestly Chris, I just found Eraserhead to be a bit to artsy for me and definitely not my type of film. Its not the kinda film I can sit down and watch for its duration and than at the end say to myself .... damn, that was good, but yes Eraserhead did make me feel uneasy, but I cant say I enjoyed it, that's not knocking you though, we're all different.

I'm being honest when I say, If I never see Eraserhead again, it wont be a problem ;)

Cheers.

We'll call it a draw :).

Fight Club ALWAYS comes to mind. That certainly took me a while to work out.

The very end (the last actual frame) always makes me laugh ;)

Just watched this, talk about steaming pile of WTF???
Yeh totally, was reasonably enjoying it till it went all `fight club gone wrong` at the end.
Loved donnie darco tho, directors cut is supposed to glean a bit more haven`t seen that yet.

Anything by Uwe Boll. The confusing part about his movies is why people are still giving him money to make movies.

I'm in the same boat as you, I love watching films that make me think, here is a few I've seen and enjoyed;

Donnie Darko, Fear and Loathing, 12 Monkeys (like you have)

American Beauty
Butterfly Effect
Elephant
Fight Club
The Heathers
Memento
Mulholland Drive
Pi
Requiem for a Dream
Se7en
The Usual Suspects
Vanilla Sky
The Virgin Suicides

There must be more but I can't name them at the moment.

I don't think some of them are confusing at all....

American Beauty - Pretty straight forward to me...
Butterfly Effect - time travel through illness, the only thing that could be confusing is the timeline
Elephant - not seen
Fight Club - Simple, they are the ........ person
The Heathers - not seen
Memento - All make sense in the last scene
Mulholland Drive - Now this is confusing, some say all of it is a dream
Pi - not seen
Requiem for a Dream - Very simle, drugs is bad, MmmmOK ?
Se7en - He's the killer !!!!!!!!!!
The Usual Suspects - No......not him again !
Vanilla Sky - not seen the remake but the original, not confusing at all.
The Virgin Suicides - eh? there's no twist in this at all, in fact, there's an narrator !

Donnie Darko went right over my head, i still dont have a clue wtf it's about. I didnt get Fight club till the end and then i was like why....

Fight club for me. The first time I saw it, I hadn't a clue what was happening until the final moments. I then watched it for a second time and it all seemed so obvious... Very cleverly done!

When I first wathed it I was very hung over. It didn't occur to me that the single frame appearances of Brad Pitt at the beginning couldn't of been a dodgey tape (it was a dvd for a start). Come the end of the film it all clicked and I was all omg

To bring something different into it, I thought Lucky Number Slevin required more thought than your run of the mill hitman film to follow it correctly.

I'm going to add Ghost in The Shell. It's manga, but don't let that put you off.
Always funny when people dismiss it as cartoon and then completely miss the point of the film.

K-PAX is also good. Not confusing maybe, but thought provoking. Everyone interprets it slightly differently, and it's worth going back to for another watch. Haven't read the book though, so I can't say if there's a more definite interpretaion in there.
