Connecting PS3 to Monitor via VGA?

Hi,
I want to move my PS3 from my TV to my monitor. I am using the DVI for my PC so I want to connect it via VGA as I don't want to constantly be switching cables. Is there a massive loss in picture quality when using HDMI > VGA? How would I sort out sound?

for the sound, you'd need a set of speakers with Coaxial inputs or optical inputs. Then set the PS3 to output the sound through the supplied multi AV lead, and have video go out through the HDMI port.

I was looking at another store and found what I thought was the right itme but it was VGA Input to HDMI output for about £20.

I am looking at DVI now. How would I get sound output to my monitor speakers? can I use a PS3 Composite AV cable and but an adapter I have seen for the 2 soupd plugs to 3.5m stereo? By the looks of the cable and the back of the PS3 it fits into the unused AV Multi Out port.
 
^ yes you can, you set the sound up in the sound settings bit to output from the multi av instead of hdmi

That should work fine for the sound. As for the DVI all you would need is a HDMI to DVI cable but you need to make sure your monitor is HDCP compatible. Ideally you'll also want a monitor capable of 1:1 pixel mapping as you can only use the standard HD resolutions so the picture will be stretched on most monitors.
 
The VDIGI product looks good but 2 weeks delivery :/
I have the Asus MW221U, the spec says HDCP but I can't see anything about the 1:1 Pixel Mapping.

I play my PS3 on a HDCP monitor without 1:1, it results in slight screen stretching vertically, however in games this isn't really that noticeable a problem and with games like MGO and super stardust you are able to adjust it to fix the problem.

For blu-ray playback however, it ruins the image as the stretching is more noticeable.
 
Just to point out VGA is analog, so you will not be able to go HDMI to VGA without a signal conversion, like that Fury cable. DVI-HDMI is possible but again has to be digital DVI (DVI-D) and not DVI-I.
 
Looking at this option too... Have a Synchmaster 21" W/S monitor with VGA and DVI inputs. At the moment I'm using the DVI input for my PC graphics card output so presumably this would have to revert to the VGA input (lower quality?) via the supplied converter dongle.

Not sure what connections my speakers have, think it's just a 3.5mm jack from the sound card - may have to buy a separate small amp and seperate speaker pack.

GTA4 is okay on the big screen but like one of the contributors above I prefer gaming on a smaller screen. Also the times I have for gaming tend to coincide with when the missus wants the TV as well.

Looks like no one solution is ideal or particularly cheap but it has to be worth considering while waiting if/when a PC version is released.
 
Further to the above...

Well it should be possible to get the sound hooked up to the PC speakers but involves a bit of fiddling.

The PC soundcard is connected by a 3.5mm stereo jack which is hard wired into the back of one of the speakers.

So in order to feed from both the PC and PS3 I will have to assemble:

A. RCA White/Red ex PS3 into 3.5mm jack male. Connect to C

B. 3.5mm to 3.5mm male ex PC soundcard. Connect to C.

C. 2 x female 3.5mm into 1 x 3.5mm male jack. Connect to D.

D. 3.5mm female to female connector (very hard to find).

Into which I then plug the 3.5mm male jack supplying the speakers.

Which will probably blow when I connect the PS3 (or nothing happen...).

Wouldn't it be easier if Rockstar had just put the faffing thing on PC and be done with it!

I did this yesterday with HD fury - its simple. although i wish i had seen that vdigi thing earlier for my bro.

1) plug Hd fury (or whatever) into your VGA input and into your PS3's HDMI input
2) take your av multi lead (- this plugs into your A/V multi out and has white.red and yellow cables - hopefully you have one - if you dont they are really cheap) - forget the yellow cable and take your red and white leads and plug them into a 'phono to 3.5mm jack converter' (you will pay no more than £2.50 for this at a well known electronics specialist or any audio outlet) see here: http://www.hificollective.co.uk/images/avp040m.gif

3) plug your connected phono to 3.5mm jack converter into the line in jack on your sound card - typically blue in colour
4) assuming your pc and speakers are on you just need to go into your ps3's display settings and make sure it is outputting at the correct res through HDMI till you see a picture
5) go into your ps3's audio settings - select a/v multi out via scart - sound should be working now.

you're done

6) if you hear no sound go into the audio settings on your PC and make sure that the line in section is not muted and have the volume set appropriately.

Yes it's going to have to be out of the AV Multi socket as the PS3 doesn't have a seperate red/white output (my bad for not checking first). Thanks for the tip about using the soundcard input, will save a bit of wiring.

Quick check in the loft - yep, got an AV Multi cable already so just a quick trip over to Hi-de-Hi to get a 2 phono to to 3.5mm stereo adaptor (already got a HDMI to DVI lead).

Up and running and all for £2.49.

Looks a whole lot better on the PC monitor and more comfortable sitting back in the PC chair than leaning forward on the sofa.

I am just waiting for my dvi to hdmi cable then i am ready to go and i couldnt remember what it was called the 'phono to 3.5mm jack converter' so i will nip out and get one of them :) .
