Conroe 3.6Ghz, X1900 Xfire....

nah not relevant at all. it's just one of the chosen few, vapo'ing a pre-release cherry chip in search of WR's. now, if he was thrashing a retail chip that'd be relevant, very relevant, anything else is just hype/PR generation on behalf of the manufacturers.

personaly i'm just gonna wait till i can get my own sticky mits on a retail chip before i salute Conroe as being the next best thing since sliced bread. until then i think both my much loved Northy & Opty are safe. ( for the time being :p )

Are you saying that retail chips may not clock this well as that one or that the performance of this pre release chip will not be the same as the retail ones clock for clock? I think its relevant as a performance indicator for the up coming chips.

Yeh they "may" not clock as well, but for all we know they may clock better.
performance clock for clock should be the same.
Its certainly an insitght into what the chip can do

Personally I am dissapointed with the 3Dmark benchmarks. Especially since this chip is *so called* +-25% faster clock for clock than a FX60. It certainly isn't showing it there.

Wasn't 3dmark generally biased towards Netburst chips though?

Might be a similar thing.

errr no.

i'm saying benchmarks of cherry picked pre-release chips being vapo'd by one of the chosen few ( the manufacturers don't give those kinda chips just to any old Tom, Dick or Harry after all ) ain't particularly relevant.

benchmarks from readily available retail chips being thrashed by you or i, now there relevant, anything else is just part of the manufacturers PR/hype. ;)

3Dmark's primary goal (especially in the latest edition) is to test the graphics card, not processor.

seriously now , intel has PHWN'D amd big style
It's been a long time coming (I count 3 years), but yes it's finally happened :) The real test now is how long Intel can firmly hold on to the enthusiast market.

as long as its entire lineup of products are cold-bug free intel will dominate the enthusiasts :D

Its not as if everyone has got phase!

Id say price was more important than pure performace

it's horses for courses tho.

for me performance is far more important than the price, as long as they deliver the goods then i'm not too fussed what they cost ( within reason ).

Fair enough although you still need a fast cpu to get the most out of a SLI / crossfire setup. I don't know I was just expecting more compared to what other benchmarks were showing.

And from personal experience in 3dmark05 a cpu can make a lot of difference to the overall score.

Wil have to wait and see until the retail chips are out and fellow forum goers have given them a good overclocking.

beat me to it Kesnel ;)

sure looks good.

I think conroe should break 4.5ghz just after release time when people stick it under LN2.

sub 10 maybe :) would certainly be nice. I hope nvidia and intel work something out for sli...

i'm sure amd will try to counter with something and as you know competition is good for the consumer just look at the way gpu's are going !

Seems to do 3.33Ghz quite easily on air, which would make sense given thats what the Conroe XE is clocked at anyway.

It's definitely nice to see a next-generation chip that shows a very positive improvement over the current A64 lineup. I don't personally care whether its Intel, AMD or John Smith's World of CPUs who manufactures it - just as long as its reasonably priced and encourages competition & development.

I'm definitely looking at a Conroe & X1900 Xfire setup for my next upgrade, which has been due a couple of months anyway.

right, as far as im aware being a relative noob, conroe is a complete new architecture right? is am2 just a revamp adding ddr2 etc? conroe will blow this away if so wont it. what will amd answer be? has been a loooong time since i bought an intel chip p3 1 gig i think!
i cant see amd sitting down and taking this lighly, conroe looks awesome!
what about these mew chips that are leakin onto the market? i have heard rumours of a chinese chip, dragon i think that is gonna come out and at lower clock speeds it is supposed to blow away the competition, word of mouth rumour im afraid so i cannot back it up! i think i saw a para on inquirer about it though a while back.
