Control Resonant

Interesting, I'm fully done with the game but had no idea there was a weapon swap wheel... also you seem to use the hammer most - it was my 2nd weapon for the full playthrough but I only ever used it to break mould armour in the end. The daggers + fire had every mob faltered within 3-4 hits in the end. (I woulda blitzed the mission you were showing within a minute :P)
The weapon wheel is a mod, much faster than opening the loadout to change weapons/finishers and makes combat more fun. I'd usually use the daggers more (especially against mold) but hammer is just too fun :) ...and often felt safer in this scenario against level 9's because of the stun. I don't think my daggers are fully upgraded, but they often kill before falter on weaker mobs from the crits/artifacts I'm using.

If you haven't done the Shum score challenges you should!

Shum can do one! Even if you falter kill every parent mob, you don't score enough. So you gotta mess around with killing the dross. Unless they add an achievement for it, I'm done.

I like that the art galleries in the game have work by real artists

You get a bonus the quicker you are. I got the top score in at least one by ignoring the ads and if you can do them within a minute the bonus should be massive lol. The Empire Avenue one might be the only one where you need to kill some ads, but it's close. Just use the charged hammer more, sometimes it's faster :p.

I found the challenges really fun and hope they add more with DLC. I don't really pay attention to achievements at all but it's a shame there's not one for topping them.

Hmm, I might need to check out shum again. The first one I did was a parkour course which was fairly boring, so I ignored the rest assuming they were all the same.

Yeah two are parkour but most are combat in some form.

The fun in the parkour ones comes from trying to beat the fastest time, but yeah if you're not that into platforming focused gameplay then you might not... resonate with them.

Being overly aggressive works heavily to your disadvantage. Enemies respond to your inputs. Also, spam your inputs and you get spammed.
I'm not really sure what to do with this information. The game is quite spammy is it not?

You go up to an enemy spam attack and dodge at the right moment. Rinse repeat.

I find the sheer number of enemies can get overwhelming and I get attacked by enemies off screen.

It's tough.

You can change a lot of attributes to make you stronger and/or enemies weaker. I found the combat a bit tedious so increased my damage just to get through mobs quicker. I think the settings are under Accessibility and there are lots of options so you don't have to go full cheese mode.

Yeah in options, Gameplay > Assist options there are presets for streamlining combat, or you can tweak it all yourself.

The combat loop is quite focused around getting the dominance buff from executions, which greatly increases your damage for a short time. So usually you want to try deal Falter to stun & execute enemies as a priority, taking advantage of weaker enemies for that earlier on, and then use your added strength to more quickly deal with stronger enemies. Ideally you want to stun as many enemies as possible or is efficient enough to do. If you use the hammer for example, then a partially(almost fully) charged attack will immediately stun a lot of the basic enemies without killing them. The dominance buff is the fist icon that appears at the bottom left.

You get more ways to boost your damage as you progress. Also, having more of the weapons/finishers unlocked increases your overall power(aberrant power) a fair bit even if you don't use them all.

When it comes to off-screen attacks there are yellow indicators and audio cues that help warn you, but I found not staying in one spot for more than a few seconds was a good strategy too.

I'd also not worry about having to engage with every enemy you see unless they're blocking a path/door, since you don't get exp or anything from just defeating them - you get stronger from exploration, feats, side activities etc.

The thing with combat for me is it's easy to get caught up with spamming attacks and throwing in the occasional dodge focussing on the tanky enemy in front of you. If you're struggling, try spamming movement instead. The game has a lot of dynamic movement available from aerial attacks to walking up walls and pulling yourself to ledges and the game expects you to use them as the enemies are weak to movement in their own way. Most enemies and their attacks are fairly slow moving. If you get focussed on the one enemy in front of you and attacking / dodging them, what you don't see offscreen is all the mobs slowly closing the gap to you and all the projectiles that, if you were looking at them you would easily dodge instead hit you out of nowhere, often for big damage as you don't have that much health (combat relies heavily on triggering heath drops, rather than having a big health pool). So yeah, don't forget to move about so the enemies can't group up or lock on to you as when they do, they can kill you very quickly. All the rooms you get locked into for the duration of the fight, have a scan for any of the movement interaction points like walls you can walk up as they're there to help.

I'm using the scythe which doesn't have much damage.

My current strategy was to leave the smaller enemies untill I needed health as I thought they where easier to take down if I needed any emergency health.

But yea I'm dieing a lot or winning encounters but by a whisker.

Yeah the smaller enemies are good for health too for sure, did that a lot as well especially earlier on.

Which secondary weapon are you using?

I didn't use the scythe that much until later, seems handy for dealing with groups but definitely feel you'd want to make use of your secondary weapon (secondary attack button) for more focused damage in that case.

My secondary is the slow hammer type weapon.

I liked it for dealing Falter, especially once upgraded a bit I think. There's a bit of finesse too in that you can partially charge it - if you just need a little bit more falter or want to avoid killing for the stun instead.

In some ways I found the game gets easier once you can take more advantage of the various skills, buffs and upgrades. I did explore in-between missions a fair bit though.

That's not spammy.

If you need to do 1,1,1,1 for a combo but actually spam 11111111111111 you get penalised with more enemy aggression. Souls games do this, too. Timing is rewarded.

If you don't do any attacks at all, you'll notice that the enemies attack significantly less.

Your goal is to build falter to do an execution, then use enhanced damage to hit the bigger enemies and do more executions. You mix in abilities and status effects as required based on the enemy. Fire against mold, rocks/kinetic against armoured enemies. Mold against the
hedron enemies
.

You can also use enemy attacks to your advantage. Example: the Hiss that fires a laser is great for wrecking other Hiss. Use your character to aim the laser and then stand behind what you want it to hit.

If you're approaching the game by spamming the scythe and expecting it to be easy, you're going to have a hard time. The scythe works really well with the fist launcher combo finisher. Once the launcher is upgraded it launches multiple enemies and then the scythe comes into its own with multiple enemies and aerial attacks.

I found the combat quite "spammy" and difficult in the prologue ( up until you defeat the Artist ). But once I got a few levels & talents unlocked combat became a breeze. I use the twin daggers as my primary attack ( fast strikes and high crit chance ) with the combo finisher that provides an area effect /sweep attack. Rarely use the secondary attack ability.

Once you increase aberrant power etc you'll become less inclined to "spam" attacks as your damage is more impactful. In the beginning of the game, your attacks are weak - it's like hitting a large monster with a fly swatter. I think this forces players to spam attacks in desperation. Imo, the prologue isn't a good introduction to the combat system ... it's not representative of what the game is like just a few hours later.
