Core 2 Duo or AM2 Advice?

easyrider said:
I came from an AMD rig.

Ill jump ship again when AMD have a faster CPU than INTEL.

Fact is AM2 is slower inferior tech right now.

The graph clearly shows the C2D being better than any AM2 chip currently.
How many more facts do you need?

im a real brand whore :D

i've owned in the past - original slot A AMD Athlon, Several AMD athlon XPs (x1800 and x1900 ), ive also owned a 2.26gz P4 Northwood, and a 2.8ghz Northwood (C variant with 800mhz bus), as well as an Athlon 64 3200 winchester.

Same goes with graphics cards as well, ive had a TNT 2 Ultra, Geforce 2 GTS, Geforce 3 ti 500, Radeon 9700, Radeon x1800 and Radeon X1900. I've not got any loyalty to any particular brand. But the fact of the matter is you get more fps for the same money with Core 2 Duo currently.

i think you've just about summed it with

the AMD option is very close to me right now. I remember the days when everyone loved the good old AMD.
I showed you a setup that would cost less than what you originall posted, but that would give you more fps than your X2 setup. You obviously feel obliged to buy AMD out of some sort of brand loyalty, so just do it.

I'm no fanboy didn't say i was as i currently own a Intel System now just simply looking for an upgrade.

Then if you are looking for an upgrade why go AM2? :p

It slower than C2D at it costs the same.

Other than brand loyality there is no reason whatsoever to go AM2.

Why do you think hundreds of people on this forum are getting rid of their amd
rigs for conroe?

For the good of their health?

LMAO :D

I agree if he wants to buy older tech for the same money and have a slower pc into the bargain.

Let him. :D

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail - £215.01 inc VAT.

Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail - £82.24 inc VAT.

Whats the problem with the above Motherboard.

I used to be AMD/ATI all the way, hell even in laptops I made sure it was an AMD

Did a big upgrade a few weeks back and I have switched (dont start on the nvidia choice, that was a Im bored of ATI thing)

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail.
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail.

And your saying this is the best choice to go for gaming etc.

6300
DS3

Can't be beaten for 215 quid :D

for sli go for the 680i

around £320 for both chip and mobo

320 notes for intels entry level chip and a motherboard, you could get a low end X2, motherboard and still have a hundred quid to spare  socket LGA775 motherboards are way overpriced, except the DS3 which is one stonking board

Its not the DS3 and 6300 will cost you around

£215

but for the enthusiast, who wants overclocking and such why would you buy anything other than a 3800+ and overclock the brains out of it, 8% speed improvement just doesn't justify just how much it is for some 775 motherboards, and what you talking about exactly, you'd be STUPID to buy AM2, tell that to the millions who bought pentium IVs when K8 was kicking them all over, with there 65nm versions of K8 coming out, seems logical to buy AM2 to me

Another thread ruined by a flame war. The guy just asked for some advice and then ended up getting abused. It's pathetic guys.

Geepee, the mobo and cpu you picked out:-
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - Retail
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
will do you fine. If you did eventually go for the 8800gts then you might want to look at this article here . Ok, it's a gtx but it does show up some very interesting performance comparisons. The E6300 beats all of AMD's cpu's on all but two tests and then there is nothing in it.

C2D is faster than anything AMD has to offer but AM2 also has some bargain pricing. It's the usual story of price v performance and you have to decide where to draw the line. At the end of the day it's completely up to you.

Like for like the Intel Mobo's are more expensive - surely you guys cant disagree on that?

Just like we cant disagree that the Intel is a better CPU (though not by that much-at stock)

eh?

What utter tosh.

With the DS3 and a 6300 the chip can be clocked to 7x500 giving 3.5ghz.

1.7ghz overclock :D

C2D overclocks far more than AM2 chips.

Its the enthusiats overclcokers choice.

Do you know how fast a 3.5ghz C2D actually is?

It leaves the top end AM2 chips for dust.

I originally specced him this combo on the first page.

sure is one of the best choices at the moment, just got the ds4 myself and about to get a 6300.

1st intel for a while too, last one i tried was a P4 3.4 and that just felt too slow and stayed about 2weeks as it felt slower them my XP2500! so AMD was the winner then, now i'm also biting the bullet as the C2D's are not just faster in benchies but also said to be faster overall, well i'll soon know for sure :)

Not sure i'd trust amd at present, i mean who knows what they might concoct with an ati in it that needs yet another different socket.

Wich ever you choose it should do you well for 12months at least and if your like a few folk here it'll be replaced in less than that anyway :D

After reading all the advice and being flamed for no reason i've decided to go with Intel. Thanks goes out to those who have helped!

Is there any particular reason why i should not go with the Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard?

Don't think DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard will be on offer next week as i'm placing the order not until then.
