Core 9000 series

Yup it makes me laugh when all the nvidia fanboys go on about AMD having dubious power usage... which is kind of true until you start undervolting vega which AMD should have bloody well done in the first place.
However its a laugh because most of them are running a stupid amount of power through there cpu for next to no benefit... unless you really can feel a massive difference between 4.9 and 5.1 Ghz

I haven't undervolted my Vega. The Nitro+ cooler is good enough and hitting 1760 core, still doesn't put strain on it.
It only works a third of the time while benching with Time Spy. LoL.

If amd were to under-volt Vega they probably would have had to do it on a core by core basis with a different bios for every single card, or at the least, a different batch of bios files for each set of cards they know would work at x voltage. Realistically that's not practical so they had to go with a voltage they know would work for them all.
 
I never said they did :) I already gave Ryzen a shot for a year, and acknowledge that for productivity work it's king of the hill ^^

It pretty good for gaming too, i'm looking at your signature, you could have had a GTX 1070 or a GTX 1080 with the same money you spent on your GTX 1060 with the 8700K, its the undisputed gaming king but as a recent review showed at 5Ghz its only about 15% faster overall at 1080P with a GTX 1080TI than a 2700X @ 4.2Ghz, the 12 thread 1600/2600 is just as good at gaming because no games make a difference 16 vs 12 threads.

Personally i think if you're getting a GTX 1080TI anyway you should get the 8700K and the 8700K only, but when it comes down to not having a limitless budget the 6 core Ryzen always wins out with the saving against the Intel chip going on a better GPU, that could be a GTX 1080TI instead of a 1080.
 
I totally get your point @humbug but I'm one of those awkward outliers. My favourite games are Cities Skylines (threads very well but eventually bottlenecks on one of them) and Kerbal Space Program (totally limited by single thread, occasionally uses 2). For those specifically, I feel like this 8700K is about as good as I'll get. The 1600X was great vs my 2500K for MT, but was only a few percent on ST loads. And the motherboard was a total butt and had to go before it killed my m.2 drive with gpu waste-heat. It is possible that a 7700K would have done me just as well, but I feel like these 6-cores will probably last me 2-3 years even if I do pick up a new favourite game :)

The 1060 was originally a partner for that 2500K and it didn't seem so silly at the time, but I agree that it's now an absurd bottleneck for any normal type games, even at 1440p 60hz. I may up it to a 1070ti in a couple of months, if only so I can turn on the shinies in Ark Survival. Unless something new gets announced... I've heard rumblings of nvidia's 11-series for mobile not being far away.

I have a GTX1080FE and an IB Core i7 and ARK still hammers my graphics card at qHD,and it appears to be mostly GPU bound:

Oh for sure there are some outliers where Intel clearly are better, some Flight Sims spring to mind, games like CSGO, but then again we are talking 600 FPS vs 800 FPS.

Arma III was another one, until it got patched with a huge jump in performance, Ryzen runs Arma III every bit as well as SkyLake / Coffeelake post its Ryzen patch.

And this is the thing, the performance of Ryzen is there, for the vast majority of modern games Ryzen gaming performance is clock for clock at least on par with Coffeelake, sometime a little less, sometimes a little more.
Older games were made long before Ryzen was a concept, a technical drawing sometime don't do well on Ryzen, these games don't know what it is, they don't understand it, when they get patched as Arma III did suddenly a game renowned to be very heavily Intel slanted becomes just as good on AMD.

I'm excited for the future, at least in the CPU space we have real competition again and i think Intel know they have a mortal fight on their hands, again. :)

Kerbal Space program needed high speed CPU because it was installing Red Shell to spy on you. Alongside another 50 games....

That wasn't brilliant, agreed, but once it was raised as an issue the devs were pretty quick to take it out of the next version. Red Shell itself isn't excessively evil - you don't want it on your system, but it's not the worst thing out there by far.

Absolutely :) The race is on and one way or the other I feel like there's going to be a real upgrade option every 12 months or so now ^^

AMD had to push the clocks outside the sweet spot because they are even less competitive otherwise.
Anyone can over/under clock/volt any CPU/GPU and get wildly different results than at stock.
The problem that AMD GPUs have is that they are in effect over-clocked/volted out of the box so there’s not much headroom.
Whereas Nvidia GPUs and AMD/Intel CPUs are released at a more acceptable state which is why people keep their wrath for Radeons where it is appropriate.
 
im waiting for one of those 'Hilter finds out' spoof videos - title along the lines , Finds out 9900k is coming out after buying 8700k 6 months before, after buying 7700k 6 months before that .....

in the mean time, this will have to do

I wondered if they would be treated any differently for spectre and meltdown?

Of course i don't know but its not an architectural change, its a coffeelake rebrand, so i doubt it, and they are still finding new security holes, its a new set every week, they have more holes in them than a teabag.

Its just typical Intel, sales are down a bit, so rename existing CPU's to get them in the news and sell some more chips.

I can't find the link but i read something recently that said the size of the current Bios on boards is not big enough to keep doing microcode updates for spectre and meltdown so i wondered if at some point they would address this with a CPU rename and Motherboard change.
 
If they hardware level fix those now, what are they going to sell next year?:p

pmsl, to be honest, think thats a major shake up of their roadmap and design to correct - come to far with 10nm to change it all , got to save face and release something on it soon and then naturally 3 refreshes afterwards haha

server end.. guessing they've got everyone under the sun designed a new core to stem weaknesses and market share drop

Well or start deleting features.

When I modded a Z77 bios to add nvme boot I had to delete wake / boot from lan to be able to get the size small enough to be able to flash it.
