maybe the mobo can support 1900mhz memory but nehalem will only run the IMC at 1066?

i think your correct Iraklis.. whats the point in getting DDR3 if it will only run at DDR2 speeds

Core I7 supports upto 2200Mhz DDR3 but only with overclocking, Intel only base there specs on default speeds so it will only support 800, 1066 and maybe 1333.

Core i7 looks awesome, but the lure of dirt cheap DDR2 and great Wolfdale/Yorkfield chips are very tempting!

What's the average overclock on these chips? Q9550 (2.83GHz 12Mb cache) for about £220 looks very tasty.

Id fancy going full blown and get the top end but then like never upgrade or at least attempt to force me to NOT upgrade

And why the devil the core i7 900 non extreme couldnt have been at least 3ghz

according to wiki and the page it cites: (but again, take it with a pinch of salt)

Overclocking will be possible with the 800 and 900 series and a motherboard equipped with the X58 chipset. The Lynnfield and Havendale processors will use a PCH removing the need for a northbridge chipset and requiring a different motherboard design.[14]

Should beable to hit 3.6 with ease with the Q9550.
