Core Temps quite different!

Basically when running coretemp, I have noticed that the range between the cores of my Q6600 have about a 12degree range! This seems a lot. Any idea on how I can sort this out? Or is it simply just a resit the heatsink job.

Cheers

You need to check your temps under load as well because sometimes you can get a stuck sensor - it will work fine above a certain temp but then as the chip cools it 'sticks' while the other 3 cores continue to decrease. Generally it's not too much to worry about as long as your load temps are acceptable. You should only really need to lap if you're OC'ing and all your temps are too high under load and thus your OC is not viable - generally people who lap are after every last MHz from their OC.

12 does seem to be a bit excessive to be honest. Remove the HSF and check the IHS for anywhere where no contact. If all looks ok, reapply your TIM application, making sure there is a thin layer of paste all over the IHS. Remember though, too much is just as bad as having none.

12 degrees is to much, something is amiss. Either the heat sink isnt set right, there isn't an even spread of thermal compound or the heat sink IHS are concave/convex. What heat sink do you have? Also idle/load temps would also be useful.

Ok thanks so far guys. My temps are as follows:
Idle - 37 32 24 25
Load (all 100% using Prime95) - 81 78 62 59

My load looks incredibly high, but I'm sure its safe to say there never all going to be on 100% useage at the same time.

My cooler is a Freezer 7 pro.

EDIT: What programs do you suggest I use to test my LOAD temps?

Core temp to get the readings. 81 & 78 is far to hot. 62 & 59 is fine at your overclock with that cooler. 70+ degrees will be doing damage to the cpu over a period of time so i would look into it.

It look to me like you heat sink isn't making proper contact with the cpu, you may want to try re-setting the heat sink and re-applying the thermal paste.

i get this with my E8400 and have reseated it loads of times but still the same results.

Ok I shall try this again, cheers. I'l let you know how it goes! (when I get round to doing it :p)

Mines are the same idle, there is one core that is about 5C above the rest, this evens out at 100% load tho.
2 of my cores are as much as 13C higher than my other 2 but, like you, this all evens out when under load as mentioned in my thread here (from post #10)

I would say that you have nothing to worry about :)
