Cost of Living - Shrinkflation is speeding up at an alarming rate

I was about to post that ^^

Up from £1.39 to £1.50 is 7.9% increase.
Size down from 110g to 110k is 9.1% decrease.

It's not huge in the grand scheme of things if you don't eat Galaxy chocolate, but it's still an overall change of 17%. This is higher than inflation and is affecting the grocery bill with rises affecting pretty much all food and drink.

They'll probably announce surprise profits too

Just got in from Tesco. Saw the frijj milkshakes on off at. Clubcard price of £1. Thought that was expensive for hem to be on offer, their bottles have actually shrank from what I remember was 500ml and they were regularly on off of 2 for £1. They are now 330ml.and on offer for £1 each.

Only a little thing but everything is such a rip off now.

Tesco is getting very expensive on a lot of things.

Packs of chicken portions, I buy thighs as they tend to be the cheaper and imo best anyway, even those are getting really expensive now.

Large pack of chicken breasts is like £10 now.

Might start going back to buying whole chickens and butchering them up and freezing. Doesn't take long at all.

Do people actually buy these as part of their weekly shop? They are discretionary purchases at best and really not something I'd be worred about the cost of.

I don't think I have had one since I was a teenager and for that demographic it is all about spending £8 on some coloured YouTuber water these days....

I take a trip to Waitrose to remind myself things could be worse.

Tesco own brand fresh orange juice has gone up a lot again when they were celebrating the drop in prices for it just a couple of months ago.

The other half bought a selection of meats from the "local" butcher and it included some chicken breasts. The difference in taste was surreal, like how I remember chicken used to taste like. It also doesn't produce half a gallon of water when you fry it either, unlike the water infused supermarket stuff you get nowadays.

With the food prices over the last few years i'm actually surprised people still shop at the big supermarkets like ASDA/Tesco/Sainsbury's etc..

I do all my shopping at Aldi/Lidl. I've noticed that my weekly shop has been creeping up even at those, however they're still significantly cheaper than the big supermarkets.

This is where I bemoan the lack of a local butcher to me.

There used to be four, but they've all gone now, replaced by barbers, cafés and charity shops. :(

A sad sign of the times. I hope the butcher stays in business as we've vowed to go more often, if supermarket prices reach parity with butchers then that will be easier.

Yea was going to say, I do shop at Aldi now and then, there isn't one particularly close to us otherwise it would be my regular and Tesco (or whatever) being more occasional.

But yes, even Aldi is getting expensive.

Yet so-called "Discounters" continue to have chocolate at the same price. Just Mars trying to boost profits.
Last summer the main supermarket chain here (Rewe) actually refused to continue purchasing Mars products at the prices demanded because they seemed them "unjustifiable", and Mars refused to drop their prices - so you just couldn't buy Mars products in most supermarkets here for quite a while.

But that's a good thing?

I think so.

We've basically added 50% to our weekly shop budget. No wonder a lot of people are struggling.

Yea same, weekly shop 5 years ago £50, 2 years ago £70, now like £130.

And we are cutting back on certain stuff, I've barely even been drinking over the last month.

The other thing is with energy prices, the things you think you could save on, bake your own bread for example, by the time you've factored in a couple of kWh of energy for the oven, you probably not saving any money.

I bake 2-3 loaves and a minimum of 12 rolls at a time then freeze the lot and use when required, otherwise (as you’ve said) it doesn’t really save any money.
