Cost of Living - Shrinkflation is speeding up at an alarming rate

Young lad bought me a bar of Dairy Milk the other eve... plan view it's thes same size, but it's about half as thick as it used to be.

Does anyone know if this shrinkflation effect is taken into account for the inflation figures that they quote on the news ?
The point of shrinkflation (for the most part) is to maintain profits without upping the price, as most people would rather a thing be a consistent price, regardless of inflation.

That isn't to say that every company doing it is doing it that way, some are double dipping by also raising prices.

yeah, I realise that some are double dipping, but I was wondering if the inflation figures considered a 50g pack of crisps now weighed 40g for the same price, or if they just considered it as a 1 portion pack of crisps. I guess it doesn't really matter, it's just my mind wandered there so thoguht I'd ask :)

I think it's moronic that some base/minimal level nutrition isn't involved in economic calculations as the quality of products have fallen off of a cliff, for instance potatoes have increasingly ****** me off with how much is being sold is basically inedible 'new' from the store.

So no I don't think people are actually saving anything like they think they are because they're hungrier and eat more.

where are you buying them ? aldi wonky £1.15 / 2kg are fine for boiling / smashing - you can often packs with bigger ones ok for baking too.
main problem I have with veg is foreign stuff Aldi yesterday have belgium leeks , which are clearly lower quality veg stripped down w/o external leaves.

The foreign egg issue seems worrying with poor welfare Polish hens, mentioned r4 monday too - but haven't seen any yet

The M&S Viennese biscuits are excellent if you like buttery biscuits, probably my faves at the minute!

Thank goodness shrinkflation hasn’t been applied to booze. Though price rises.

I has though, with beer anyway.

Admittedly this isn't a recent thing, but 20 years ago lager in this country was pretty good.

The various brands used to be imported from the country of origin. Obviously this was expensive, so to cut costs they started brewing it on licence at various locations in the UK, and it is completely different.

They also reduced the ABV of most of them, again as a cost cutting method due to tax laws.

And now it's getting expensive on top.

So you are basically paying premium for the cheapest of cheap Northampton brewed canal water with a label on it.

Shame.

Just get that ALDI Galahad down you, probably off the same production!

Anchor butter down from 250 gms to 200 gms at the same price £2.00
Been like that for about 10 weeks. Same goes for the spreadable variants 500g down to 400g.

We have to make sure all the old pre shrinked size sells out before we can put out the reduced size.

Taylors ground coffee was 227g now 200g. It was on clearance at my work at the old size. Bought some decaf for my parents.

Most of the time, the packaging changes design. We have to check this with the products on the shelf or shelf edge ticket (SEL)

Funny you mention that - on a whim I tried the ALDI knock-off of Peroni, called Rossini, and it is actually nicer, and no hangovers as a bonus. Cheaper, nicer, just as strong, and a 500ml bottle rather than poxy 330ml bottles.

Nate

Im a real ale gal. Don't drink amber coloured ditch water - Fosters, Carling.

Yet see customers buy a few crates of this awful stuff every week. Obviously don't have any taste buds and probably eat the god awful Richmond sausages as well.

Plus more of a wine and spirits gal too.

butters come down in price - over last few weeks - restoring 250g price/kg, milk reduced too - specsavers.

Haven't seen an explanation though, benevolent supermarkets, or cows have become more productive, Rishi could be a useful example for uk worker.

Once you start on the Belgium beers, you don't go back. It's expensive mind but you don't need many before you are utterly trolleyed.

A light beer is 5-6% over there, a lot of the stuff I bring back is 7+.
