Couch Surfing

My girlfriends flatmate had couch surfers round secretly (they keep to themselves in a big two floor flat), against the wishes of the other flatmates, and claiming they were her friends.

Little French scrote, who didn't shower often and didn't clean.

my house is my castle no way i'm letting someone who can't even affort a decent hotel in :o

You really are missing the point.

It's not just those who are trying to save a few quid by staying somewhere free.

It's about wanting the experience of staying with a local, seeing the area through their eyes, getting insider knowledge of the best places to go etc.

Like the guy i've got arriving on Friday.. He has a house in London, is a travel writer and lives off his book royalties.

I've no doubt he could afford to stay in any of our hotels... but he wants the experience, hence being a couch surfer!

a wha?

Yes, this week I have a serial killer staying for a night. The following night, a Peadophile is coming to stay. It also happens to be on the same night as my childs 9th birthday so all in all it should be a cracking night.

Haha - predictable response!

Not done it myself (tend to always know people where I'm travelling to and don't have a couch!) but know many many people who have hosted and surfed. Only ever heard positive reports.

nope I get the point totally but you do know that the larger these things become the more professional it will get.

Look at e-bay what started out as a great idea has ended up being a great boon for the scam artist and the thief? Don't believe me have a browse at some of the threads here.

This is the same someone crashes at your place on the couch. Wakes up trips over a kids toy goes home next thing you have a letter from lawyer claiming compo. Now it's a friendly affair it's fairly new but you wait it won't last long.

It's not fairly new - it's been going 6 years, and over 2 million succesful surfs

According to Alexa it is currently the most visited hospitality service on the Internet, averaging more than 30 million daily page views in July 2008.

what?

you do realise CouchSurfing has been up and running for over 5 years..
when a mate injures himself round your house, is he going to sue you?

couchsurfing is mainly used by hippies and students, rather than people who are looking to sue. you seem to have a rather dim view of life

There is an interesting split in the opinions of members here!

I've made some awesome friends doing this.

Carpe Diem!

:p

not at all I don't have strangers sleeping in my house and I've very very happy about it :D

*Knock knock*

Hi, is it Mr Gein? OK hello, I'm John. The guy whose ad you answered saying I could stay on your settee for a day or two whilst I'm in Wisconsin.

Friends? No I'm here on my own for now, why do you ask?

I used this in Sweden

Stayed in uni halls for 4 nights, had an awesome time

3 of us went, we stayed in Uppsala, lovely place :)

And each other town we visited, we messaged locals through couchsurfing and they showed us around the towns etc, we'd just buy them drink and food etc

Lmfao :eek::D

I'd seriously consider doing this myself, as I'm travelling alone so it would be an awesome way to meet people and get a free tour guide :D

exactly

it's not really a 'british' thing to do, and I'd feel weird doing it in the uk I think, but europeans tend be be a friendlier lot :)

Would I consider letting a total stranger sleep in my house? Absolutely not, and you would be a fool to even consider it!

couch surfing?

How is it even possible to surf on a couch??

1stly.. no waves
2ndly.. no wind..
3rd... you wont even be able to put a surfboard on there..
