Couch Surfing

Would I consider letting a total stranger sleep in my house? Absolutely not, and you would be a fool to even consider it!

so you never took a girl/bloke home after a night out?

although to be fair, i always made sure i went round to hers so i could run away if necessary :o

The websites involved generally have vouching and reference systems, so you can know what your guest is like before they arrive.

It's about as risky as taking someone home from a club/pub, i.e. not.

Tell that to my friend who had his apartment emptied by some skank and her friends. In his defence, he was passed out / fast asleep at the time.

We did warn him. :p

Had a similar experience, took a bird home had a fun night and found my wallet emptied in the morning

Do you know why, when you're trying to sneak out of a one night stand's house at 4am, every tiny little noise you make sounds like it's amplified ten-fold?

Used this quite a few times, most recently in Sweden (twice), and in Germany- all times its been great. Not only cheaper than a hostel but normal your 'hosts' will offer to take you out or just give you general local knowledge.

The couple we stayed with in Hamburg gave us the keys to their flat on the first night as we wanted to go for a night out!

Have I ever taken a girl back on a night out? Of course. Were we both utterly plasted? Every time! After considering this would I let strangers in to roam free? No! It's not even a decision!

A fool to consider it? I actually feel sorry for you, having such low opinion of your fellow man.

I have a very high opinion of my fellow man. That in no way translates to wanting to let them bound about my home.

it tends to be..

people at uni, letting other students on their travels, kip over for a night or so

for exmaple, I wouldn't just let some random geordie stay at my house :D

I have no problem with someone who is happy to risk it. I don't like someone making that decision against the wishes of the other people they live with.

I'm going to be travelling around America mostly via couchsurfing. I haven't read the whole thread but there was a 10-15minute interview on Excess Baggage (BBC Radio 4) not so long ago (2 weeks ago maybe?) which should still be up for anyone who wants to hear about it some more.

If any of you were interested - just had my couch surfer stay for 2 days.

One of the most interesting people i've ever met. He loved the place, we spoke for hours about his travelling, inspired me to do something about my urge to move about!

He's sending me a copy of his books when he gets back, to say thanks. Top bloke.
