Counter-Strike Global Offensive (CSGO)

Work have decided to have office gaming sessions every week. There are clearly a few good players already after this weeks session who were pretty good at slaughtering everyone. First time playing for me but I’m pretty good at FPS games. Still found it tricky against these clearly well seasoned CS:GO players.

Any tips for a newbie at this game?

I played some games today and was just trying out different guns etc. to see what I liked. I also tried different tactics and varying levels of aggression. I found the SG-553 to be pretty good. I often went for the UMP when I couldn’t afford it. Should I do that or is there another gun I should have as a cheaper alternative?

In which situations do you tend to use Molotov and grenade? I’m trying to understand the trade offs of each of these. Is the decoy any use?

Does everyone tend to use silencers?

Decoy is very slight use, its cheap so I say buy it but the time taken to throw it is the cost. Most useful with an awp, fake first shot. Play retake servers to answer most of these questions for yourself, that mode starts with a bomb plant the recap of a site just after. Its very fast gameplay.

SG is good for holding an angle, its a shame when guns get thrown about in balance. To fire it full auto now is kinda silly where as AK47 is the golden standard always and forever. UMP is perfect eco weapon, with one requirement you must be hitting headshots with the recoil pattern so you should never expect to win vs rifles. It got nerfed also, try out tec-9 that was altered recently.

Utility damage is best used indirectly, so Molotov is an ideal flush for someone in cover. AWP in window or whoever, upset people. Smokes never get used enough, if you bought a smoke every single round of the game you'd be learning something useful win or lose. Super basic tip, when you withdraw run away from a hold throw a flash into the wall ahead of you if the enemy chases they meet your flash not just your back. Very common new player mistake is to throw a flash at the enemy, if you dropped it at your feet and looked 180 behind for a second it'd work out far better but right click and release while running is better. IF you mess up flashes or flash team mates, then you might need to only use them when solo till you know better. Right click scoreboard or top right gives stats.

This guy did lots of good vids years ago and he is coach for one of the teams still. Watch his stuff is likely quicker in getting the jist of cs. Silencer has no use removed, I wish we could throw it at them. Use the gun that works for you, very few have the skill to get headshots with shotguns well enough but it is viable if you do. If the enemy has armour you are not going to survive just hitting the body

Amazing advice. This is really appreciated. Great video too. I will check his others.

Tried the 100 kill challenge on the workshop map "Aimbotz"

I did quite well for someone who is considered a "Boomer" in gamer years. 57 seconds :D (This only took me about 4-5 hours to finally grind out the muscle memory to do it) :(

I have another session with colleagues later. Hopefully the practice and watching some of the adren videos will have given me an edge. I certainly felt I was playing better. I still have a lot to learn especially when playing games with teams of varying level of skill

never played this in my life but my 2 sons play it all the time - just realised I actually own it on steam so think I will fire it up for the first time ever later.

I think its free to play on Steam now but the free version has a lot of cheaters or so i have heard, worth going Prime if you actually start to play it properly as you will avoid most of the cheaters etc.

I currently have my FPS on CS GO uncapped and is in the 300-400..

Will it make any difference if I cap to my monitor refresh rate (120hz) and save some heat, noise and power?

Or keep it on uncapped?

120 fps is ok enough for average ranks but the advice I agree with is allow for double refresh rate. The valve servers update 64 times a second. The majority of hardware registered on steam is 60hz.
I used to cap to 30fps when I first tried cs, geforce 2 or something i seem to remember was very wobbly so flat steady 30 felt better.

I hope they really do change the CS engine now, lots of people suffer from its reliance on mostly 1 core. Also the slight possibility it resets the progress of the moronic hack industry.

I'll try and beat that, i'm way out of practise so close might have to do.

Does anyone know any good private servers? Currently using matchmaking casual to play with some friends but most games now we end up with a cheater on one of the teams - really frustrating. We were just gonna give up and play against bots on the highest difficulty but would be good if there are any decent servers.

I only play on casual servers and rarely encounter obvious cheating.
Couple that seemed to hide it fairly well, and a couple blatant but generally people have good games & bad over the course of a few maps.
