Anyone else find this? Used to play lots of it back in the day, but after shooters like cod, tf2 and bc2 are around it just feels like so much more of a chore to play. Waiting for a whole round to respawn, lots of recoil and the massive focus on headshots all seem a bit old hat now.

Indeed, I couldn't even play vanilla TF2 last time i tried 20s respawn bored the crap out of me.

Games have evolved loads, its all about instant satisfaction now. They have been reflecting this for the past 5+ years.

I used to love CS too.

Not really no, it's a preference and there's nothing wrong with games having 0 respawns, certainly doesn't make it 'old hat'.

Nope, it is still awesome and I recently started playing DoD as well.

I own CoD and BF:BC, but I prefer CSS and DoD and L4D. I hate the crap you have to put up with in CoD and BF:BC annoys me because it is a team game and nobody seems to play as a team

I've had a few goes on COD and one or two others but I prefer CS:S, so I haven't really had to 'try to get back into it'. Though I do notice if I have even a few days off, which I do (and much longer) from time to time, it takes me a while to get in my eye again.

ever since i bought BC2 in the sales at the start of the week ive been trying to make it feel more like CS:S lol. Changing FOV, mouse sensitivity, if only i cud set my rates....

I'm the other way round, I can't get into games like BC2, recently bought it in the steam sale, only played twice online, struggling to get into it, i've become too used to CS:S, bought it in last years steam sale and i love it.

Oh no, an online fps that requires the ability to aim :p

I am utterly sick of current fps. CoD, BC2, MoH - developers are slowing games down and taking away the need for accuracy in the name of accessibility. The genre is not evolving - it's being tailored for mass appeal and is the lesser for it.

CSS is from a different time, it also offers something completely different. I remember playing UT2003 for the first time and while is was nice to run around shooting heads, CSS offered objectives that could only be achieved if you worked together and stayed alive. Even BC2 with squads still doesn't make people play together.

CSS will always be hated by those who have little skill and precision in the same way COD is disliked by those who want to run around shooting and hitting the W key until they get a nuke and finish the game.

If you are not enjoying CSS, i would recommend Insurgency, a mod for CSS. It is basically COD, http://www.insmod.org/

I have a quick blast now and then, but the oversized minimap and overall slight changes to the game have changed it too much, it's still ok but not anywhere near as good as I thought it used to be.

Nope not at all. I can get right back into it, find my rhythm again and start pwning noobs. :D

I agree with the posts saying fps games have devolved as i have thought this for some time.

Developers are reducing the skill required to get any kind of killstreak to allow joebloggs to enjoy the game and keep purchasing sequels.

Anyhow CS and to some extent CSS was about clans, where a group of skilled players could work as a team and set tactics without relying on any luck or game mechanics to win matches.

But as with anything things become 'dated' and people moved onto lesser games just for better graphics and got sucked into the instant gratifcation games that required only a few days to master.

Well guess what there boring and offer me nothing i aint seen before, i dont care about my ai helicopter taking out 4 people in a round, its just a horrible way to make my score look awesome when really i didnt do much to earn it. Seems the majority of people like the mindless spray fests and dumbed down gameplay and as usual the industry caters for them as thats where the money is.

Its a shame really and i have been waiting for a game that doesnt keep rewarding you for doing the easiest of things and takes time to master. Only game that came close was rainbow.

The game itself is fine, it's the community/servers that have deteriorated and ruined it.

90% of all servers in CS:S have ridiculous mods or stupid map cycles, or both. It takes longer to find a proper server with a proper map cycle and no game ruining mods than it does playing the game.

The demise of the GSP's hurt CS a lot.

I recently had a game of CS:S and found it really enjoyable. Took virtually no time to get back into the swing of headshots. Personally I enjoy the fact you only have one life and it eventually turns into a hunt for the last player.

Grabbing other peoples guns and desperately fighting off the rest of the enemy who out numbered you was great fun, especially if you won :D

Aye gotta love the Source.

Put a few hrs into over the last few days. Still a good example of a game that you can pick up and play for 10mins or hrs at a time.

Having favorite servers helps, I have not clan matched for a good while now...

Never been a fan of re-spawning, I find if you know that if you die you will come back to life again it takes away from the tension and subsequently the involvement.

Horses for courses mind ;)

This is what has annoyed me since the days of the original. Find a decent server that is popular (but rarely totally full), no awful mods, just the standard maps (unless a server admin feels like having a bit of fun :p ) and it's awesome.

Valve have added in an option to the settings that makes it so you don't download any extras at all (or, just sounds). This helps the problem but you can end up with weird things being displayed because a mod is missing

I can't stand the Arcade feel of modern shooters. CS:S is still the pinacle of the genre for me.

Perservere and you'll get your pwnage back in no time.

As with other people in this thread I can't stand the nature of all the new FPS games. There's just too much focus on 'Perks' and weapon upgrades, and to a degree levelling up, from my point of view they are more of a chore to play than CS. Infact CS isn't a chore to play at all once you apply some common sense to the way you play it.

I don't find it difficult to get back into at all, intact I find I play CS much better after I've taken a break from it.

In terms of no instant respawns, I don't care, in a pulic server it allows me to discuss next round tactics with people or even just socialise which I've never seen in other FPS games. All anyone has ever said on games like Call of Duty when I've been on them is "Lol owned noobs".

It's still and will probably always be my number one FPS game if the new generation of FPS games don't change.
