Cover versions that improve the original

Metallica - Am I Evil (Diamond Head)

Wrong there mate, Thin Lizzy were a great band and just shaded it with that single, although Metallica's effort was superb.

I doubt there are many people who've heard the Diamond Head version of Am I Evil, it's better than the Metallica cover and they were a really great band, I saw them opening at Donington, excellent.

Both comments are only my opinion, obviously.;)

I severely don't like that version... the Van Morrison version is far better IMO

I prefer the Cake version of I will survive better than the gloria gaynor one :)

Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson
Radiohead - Nobody Does it Better

and Nirvana - Man Who Sold the World like someone said, a million times better than the original. Not that i'm knocking Bowie, some of his other stuff is excellent :)

I'm going to have to disagree with you there... out of the versions of Brown Eyed Girl it's definately the worst one... although I guess it's the only non-punk version.

:)
i like it, maybe because it is different to the others - i dont know, have you seen the video for it? If you've seen the end and then think of the lyrics..its a bit odd imo..

Aaaaaaahhh, I think you are missing the point somewhat here!!

It is well documented that two of the biggest influences on Metallica are Diamond Head and The Misfits. Most certainly with out the original version of Am I Evil, the Metallica as we know them would not exsist today!

As for the Misfits cover versions, how can the two completely different styles be compared? IMHO Last Caress is one of the greatest Misfits songs and any version will be good ~ but never better than the original.

As for the Iron Maiden cover, one which I have never heard, then my only comment is ;)

Pride and Glory - War Pigs (well obviously it was gonna be good - Zakk Wilde's band covering a sabbath song? Oh and I know he has another band now, but I'm talking his band in the mid-nineties)

Metallica - The Prince - OK enough now, I think we have covered ALL the covers Metallica have done :-)

Going the other way I was listening to an album the other day that a work collegue lent me and it has a cover of the Pixies "Gouge Away" what a load of pants, no one can do Pixies songs like the Pixies, or better!!!!

I think its more to do with which version you heard first, if a group you like does a cover your bound to like it more, and if some teeny-bopper band comes along to cover one of your favourite songs, your going to hate it before youve heard it.

I've heard Diamond Head's version of Am I Evil and I still believe Metallica's is better. Obviously you are entitled to your opinion. As for the Iron Maiden cover, its a lot more heavy, the main reason why I prefer it.

The metallica version of Whiskey in the jar is so much better than the thin lizzy version. Its jamez voice that really improves the song IMO and the fact that they made it a lot heavier.

Phonics-handbags and gladrags
Nirvana- The man who sold the world

Alice Donut and Killdozer came together to record a cover of "The Age Of Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In" [taken from the '70s peacenik-musical thingy "Hair"].

It never fails to make me go all happy-happy, 'cos the two contrasting vocal styles make it sound like a Muppet Show sketch.

Which is what every song should strive to be, IMO. :)

Ooh! Ooh! I nearly forgot - speaking of Metallica and covers, I have to admit I also prefer Pat Boone's easy-listening big band version of "Enter Sandman" to the original. It even manages to suck the cheese from the lyrics, which most of you will agree is quite an accomplishment.

Sorry but I'll have to drag up MetallicA one more time.

The ENTIRE garage album is amazing and I have yet heard an original that can better one of their covers although I haven't heard ALL the originals yet.

Bah all these ppl loving the garage album am I the only one who thinks its all absolute pap. I really HATE that Whiskey in the jar cover, bad song and badly covered IMO. (But then I hate pretty much everything Met have done post black album it bores me...:/)
