Covers that are better than the original?

I'm sorry, but most of those fall into the: "What were you thinking that you thought that was better than the original?" The daft version of "Sunday, Bloody Sunday"? No cover of ANY Kate Bush song is likely to work. And Metallica get to massacre two classics. "All Along the Watchtower" - yes.

Ahh we cant all get it spot on like you, eh Meridian? Whiskey in the jar though....i never liked that cover lol

I didn't know this was a cover

I long ago heard a theory that you always prefer the first version of a song that you hear, as long as it is at least a reasonable version. Presumably because your brain accepts the first version as "correct", and all others as imitations. It would be interesting to know: of the various covers listed here that people consider better than the originals, which version did you hear first?

Aside from my previous choices in the linked thread I rather randomly heard of a cover of Bittersweet Symphony by The Mexican Institute of Sound (Symphonia Agriduce might be the title although I'm not certain of the spelling) and it's brilliant. Imagine Richard Ashcroft was a forty a day man, now imagine he's woken up from the most massive drinking session then add in some semblance of a mariachi band who were also on said drinking session and you've got the genius that makes this record. I can't link to it from work but have a listen if you get the chance.

//edit and it was Sinfonia Agridulce so not quite right by me earlier.

nirvana - man who sold the world

Really, it isn't...

Some of the songs on that William Shatner album are hilarious, the title track and there's one in which he keeps repeating "You're gonna die!"

I didn't know this was a cover until a few weeks back when I heard the original by Kate Bush on our local easy listening radio station at work. Placebo's version is undeniably something far better.

Totally agree, excellent cover, excellent song.

Wicked Game by stone sour is also awesome imo, especially live.
