Covers that are better than the original?

The Sisters of Mercy - Gimme Shelter

Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows (one of the most underrated bands ever).

The Sisters of Mercy, Emma (known as the Chocolate Box song, yes it is a Hot Chocolate cover).

A more recent cover by The Sisters

Fields of the Nephilim - In the Year 2525 (who says the Nephilim don't have a sense of humour) :)

The Mission - Like a Hurricane

In no way shape or form is Jonny Cash's cover of Hurt better than the original.
(this is only my opinion;))

I like Gary Jules's cover of Mad World more than the original.

Deftones cover of Sinatra by Helmet is brilliant.

Maybe Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen). Undecided on this (and it's been recently raped by some X-Factor buffoon amongst others.)

Frightened Rabbit's version of Set You Free is brilliant.

And this original:

Led Zeppelin - You Shook Me
The Cult - Wild Child (Do I like it more, hard to say but I like it at least as much)
Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares to U
Japan - All Tomorrows Parties
Aretha Franklin - Respect
The Beatles - Twist and Shout

Some of you could be right though to an extent about favouring ones you heard first. A few of those there are covers but I bet quite a few people think they are the original versions. Led Zep, Japan and the Beatles I thought did the originals. It wasn't until later I found out they were covers.

All Cried Out - Fink (Allison Moyet cover)

Enjoy The Silence - Lacuna Coil (Depeche Mode cover) only because I prefer the modern rock sound to the 80s electro sound.

Walking in the Air - Nightwish (Aled jones cover) because anything is better than Aled Jones.
