Covers that are better than the original

The Placebo cover is ace, as is just about anything by Marilyn Mansion. Machinehead's cover of Message in a Bottle is pretty epic too.

Few others...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hey Joe and Star-Spangled Banner
RHCP - Higher Ground
Nirvana - Plateau and Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Black Sabbath given the Medieval treatment, off Sabbatum by Rondellus. Nothing will top the Sabbath version but a great version all the same.

Original (played to death on the radio at work.. urgh) nothing really outstanding about it.

Cover, just has a better vibe and sound overall.

Obviously not better than the original, but I seen Limp Bizkit at Download fest a week or so ago, they did behind blue eye's but they also did this.

Can't agree with you on the Rammstein one, but that's because to me the original is so epic.

However, unabashed DM fanatic that I am, I think this is awesome:

Controversial shout, but any cover of a Depeche Mode song because no matter how good the song is, the Depeche Mode version bores me to tears.

WHAT!!! *splutter* BLASPHEMY  !!!

Clearly 5ub hasn't found this thread as these guys haven't been mentioned yet:

I've seen them live a few times now and they're awesome not just at covers but with their own original material too.

Also I have to mention this band "WOTE" - they're one of THE most talented bands I've ever seen:

Their cover of Rihana's "Man Down" is simply awesome given there's only two of them preforming the entire video:

Another one from WOTE - with a heavily pregnant (and simply gorgeous) Sarah Blackwood giving a brilliant cover of the Madonna classic with the usual WOTE unusual musical instruments:
