COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

Covid-19 vaccines cut the potential global death toll by more than half in the first year they were available, according to a study published Thursday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The study modeled the spread of the disease in 185 territories and countries and found that without Covid vaccines, 31.4 million people would have died of the disease between December 2020 and 2021. While the pandemic has taken a devastating toll around the globe, with more than 3.5 million deaths since the first vaccine was administered in December 2020, the study estimated that vaccinations also prevented 19.8 million deaths.

“We knew it was going to be a large number, but I did not think it would be as high as 20 million deaths during just the first year,” said Oliver Watson, a Fellow at Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and co-first author on the study.

However, millions more deaths could have been prevented. The team found that one in five of the deaths that occurred due to Covid-19 in low-income countries could have been prevented if the World Health Organization’s global vaccine targets were met.

Parents flew back on Monday. Dad feeling a little congested. Mum has a scratchy and sore throat, feeling bunged up and dry throaty cough. Both tested on LFTs. Mum tested positive. She is experiencing the same symptoms as I did early June and I was negative. This is the first time in the 2.5 years since the first covid case in the UK that one of my parents has tested positive.

With flights, like colds, it just needs just ONE person to have covid, many don't bother to use LFTs or ran out and refuse to pay for them to infect a good proportion of passengers with the virus.

A colleague flew to go on a Med cruise with her husband plus sister and husband. They had to provide negative LFTs to go on the cruise. Her BIL has covid. Probably either got it on the plane - as not everyone was flying to the cruise or picked it up at one of the cafes they stopped at for a drink or lunch.

Has anyone had to organise a proof of recovery to go on holiday? I'm just been told that this a thing.

I'm due to fly out in mid July to Spain, and I tested positive for Covid 2 weeks ago. It was a lateral flow test and the Medic at work said they would be notifying my GP so I'm not even sure if I need a proof of recovery?

I'm guessing you've been vaccinated? In that case you're already covered.

The proof of recovery certificate is an alternative to getting vaccinated.

Needs to be a PCR test AFAIK to count for a recovery certificate.

Tested negative this morning. Cough is still there though. Might run tomorrow to clear this junk out of my lungs.

Several colleagues have someone in their household with it urgh - probably not long before they are spreading it around work - think I might take some time off.

From gov website

All travellers

If you are traveling to Spain you must show valid proof of one of the following on entry:

As positive covid tests are not recorded anymore.

Download the NHS app (if not already). On home page, select NHS Covid pass. From there select the pass for the booster - as shows you are fully vaccinated. Then send a copy to email and print off just in case problems with app etc.

The Covid passes last 6 months now.

Just need an updated one targetting Omicron now, as the existing one is becoming less effective to the point its not really worth having now (going by our bestie Dr John Campbell). I think somewhere mentioned an updated Moderna one was due very soon.

5 out of 9 of me and my friends who went to the RHCP in Manchester have got it, some pretty rough! We're all pretty fit tho so nothing major, just amazing how contagious this is.

Think one of my colleagues has it - though denies it is COVID - has/had all the symptoms and was completely wiped out for 2 days last week, though claims it is just a cold.

It's up to 7 out of 9 now, madness!

Bit worrying that several of my colleagues have just been to and/or are off to various music events and other shows, etc. I'm definitely gonna take some time off work to maximise my chances of avoiding it. Several of my colleagues also have people in their households with COVID currently who've picked it up from events recently.

It seems to be going through phases of non-existent, spike, non-existent around here every few weeks.

The idea of taking time off work to try to avoid covid seems ludicrous to me at this juncture. But hey, they're your holidays to burn as you so please.

I get higher than average amounts of holiday so... on a slightly more serious note though I don't expect to avoid it forever I can still manage to minimise my exposure to it in most areas without hiding under the bed but increasingly at work it is getting harder now they've dropped any COVID measures and people generally become complacent.

Problem is that LFTs are chargeable now. If people run out, they won’t bother buying any. So walking about got Covid without testing.

I would be the same - still got about 42 tests left
