Hi, my mobo is the following:

Asus M2N78-LA (Violet)

Im planning on buying a Athlon II x2 3.ghz

Would the new cpu fit or would I have to buy a new mobo ?
If I need a new mobo, can anyone link some cheap suggestions ?

is this from some HP machine? cant find anything useful online about it, no cpu support list.

Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Viola)
Socket type: AM2+
TDP: 125 watt
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

*
Phenom with Quad Core (Agena) technology 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9700 (up to 125 watt)
*
Phenom with Triple-Core (Toliman) technology 8xxx series (AM2+) up to 8xxx (up to 125 watt)
*
Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology (AM2) up to 6400+ (up to 125 watt)

Taken from the HP site for processor upgrades. Looks like it will accept all above AM3 processors up to 125W TDP.

Looking closer, Athlon and Phenom, but maybe not Athlon II and Phenom II unless anyone knows more?

Yeah I was thinking that too, doesnt really say II there.

Although it says its a am2+ mobo.

Could anyone clear this up

Edit: If the mobo isnt compatible with the CPU, could anyone link a cheap AM2+ Mobo that supports the previously linked CPU?

*Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Violet6)

This motherboard supports only AM3 processors
*
Memory support is limited to DDR3 modules only.
*
HyperTransport 3.0
*
Split power planes allow separate power management for CPU and integrated memory controller for improved power savings.
*
Supports the following processors:
o
AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb)
o
AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (Heka)
o
AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (Callisto)
o
AMD Athlon II X4 6xx/6xxe (Propus)
o
AMD Athlon II X3 4xx/4xxe (Rana)
o
AMD Athlon II X2 2xx/2xxe (Regor)

Or is it this one? proprietary machines give me a headache

If the motherboard is the one which was originally linked to by nkata then by the looks yes, you will need a new motherboard.

This assumes the case can take a std m-atx and that the oem in which your currently using does not have any special connectors, ie for tuning on the system.

It looks like it is the first one I linked too, I noticed the compaq presario and this is the link

Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Violet)

Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

*
AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
*
AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
*
AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
*
AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)

Therefore no Athlon II or Phenom II so a newer MATX motherboard, with AM2+ to take your DDR2 memory would be the thing.

Ok thank you for clearing this up.
Now i just need to find a right mobo then.

(Case is pretty big, im building the comp for mid/high gaming)

Stuck a case on to be on the safe side, hopefully your current PSU should fit fine.

So you can fit a full ATX motherboard.

this gives a lot more choice. Any AM2+ if you use your DDR2 ram or any AM3 board if you buy new DDR3 ram.
