i have a Quad core processor which is running at a very high temp. I think my current CPU cooler may be faulty, and am looking for a replacement.

ideally i would like one that does not have the push pin connection as i dont really like these, can anyone please recommend me a decent cooler that fastens by screws?

thanks

Hi
firstly have you tried reseating the cooler? And maybe re-applying TIM? If not you should try this first
If you do want a new cooler, what sort of budget are you looking at?

yep, have tried reseating it, cleaning it etc. but it still isnt helping
the desktop will shut down after a few minutes use, and i think it because of the temp, it seems to be very high on startup

budget of around £30 if possible, although may be able to increase

temps checked with BIOs and speedfan, and are around 83-85C pretty much after a few minutes or so of starting, and not doing anything

Temps are way high, there is a bigger issue than needing an aftermarket cooler as your stock cooler should be doing better than that unless it has stopped working! have you overclocked the cpu?

no not overclocked or modified in any way
i think the heatsink is not making a good enough connection, the push pins keep popping out no matter how many times i relocate and fit them

I really don't understand how many people can go wrong installing the tried and tested Retail Intel fan, it really isn't that difficult. to the op have a look here to make sure you're installing it correctly. Make sure you haven't bent any of the clear plastic pins before trying to install as well.

May be a problem in how you're inserting the push pins. Have you checked it's exactly as the manual states?

yes, read and reread, its definetly being fitted correctly, it just doesnt seem to be making a very good contact

if i fit the standard heatsink it is fine and makes a good solid fit comapared to the coolermaster hyper TX

It's just that you're saying the pins keep popping out and that only happened to me when I installed my intel cooler, removed it and forgot to turn them 90 degrees to reset them.

pins pop out when fitted correctly and even when they are in fully i dont think the heatsink is making a good enough contact, thats why the CPU is becoming very hot

Well speaking from experience some of the push pins must have failed and i know this cause i have damaged them myself, check to see if any of the pins are damaged as i think that is def your problem here.

im looking for another cooler anyway, so even if they are damaged it doesnt matter.

anyone else know of any screw fit coolers?

Personally I do not like the push pin fitting either so when choosing have always avoided .
Am on s775 and started with a Tuniq Tower - good cooler , reasonable noise levels when running at mid speed with pretty blue light. (The reviews on the 'new' one I've read have not been too positive tho)
Moved to the Titan Fenrir - better cooling than the Tuniq but not by much and I found the included fan a bit on the loud side. (found best combo was titan cooler with tuniq fan).
Was intending to stick with the Titan - very impressed with cooling ability at its price :D BUT then my case got dropped of a table :( and this damaged one of the heatpipes, which I decided involved me in getting a new cooler.
After reading reviews came down to a choice between the Corsair H50 (water) and the Prolimatech Megahalems as both were roughly the same price and performance. As was not ready for 'water' decided to go for the Prolimatech with push/pull apache fans. (total cost approx £70:eek:) and have not been dissapointed.
Am running the fans via PWM and can hardly hear them even when running under load :D Would say that the extra fan hardly changed the temps. so would not bother to buy 2 if buying again !
Fitting the Prolimatech was a real pleasure - Straight forward and when complete feels, and I think is, as solid as a rock.

Overall would recomend the Titan - cheaper & nearly as good as the Prolimatech ..... If cost difference is not an issue tho would get the Prolimatech.

If you fancy water cooling then the Corsair gets very good user reviews on here and elsewhere

n.b. Was cooling a Q9550 which was changed to a Q9650 not too long ago.
