CPU lapped and Tuniq fan changed - WOW!

Lapped my E6600 and changed the fan on my Tuniq for a Scythe S-Flex. I'm simply astounded! Temps have dropped 10 degrees and I can barely here my system now! Amazing!! If you have a Tuniq, it's well worth changing your fan. Even on low I don't think it was this quiet! :D :D

I've had the system running for over a week without changing anything, and it was a bit on the noisy side. Temps were idling around 31-32, hitting mid-50's in Orthos. Nothing wrong with that I know, but wanted to see what I could squeeze out of it.

I didn't lap the Tuniq, as it seemed ok, but I may do that some other time if the urge grabs me. More than happy with these temps for now though! :D

Hmm.. Interesting (again, lol) :)

I don't think I can bring myself to lap my cpu as I like having a warranty too much.

So what were your 'after' idle and load temps? What voltage is running through your cpu?

Sorry or the barrage of questions :)

Now idle at about 21-22, hitting 48 after about an hour in Orthos. Have not OC'd yet, but plan to soon.
Is that with the fan on full or low?

Also, is that with Intel TAT?

I don't know what 'lapping' means but those are very similar to mine at the moment. The max temp I can get my E6300 to is 52, and that is with 2 x orthos running for an hour and tuniq fan on max.

I have used the Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound as well.
That is using TAT.

EDIT - I forgot to say - I honestly cannot hear the noise difference from low to high on the Tuniq through my P180 - Its awesome!!! :D

That's exactly what I needed to know :) Thank you.

It does sound quite worthwhile. Could be enough cooling for that extra bit of voltage...

No fan setting, it's just plugged into mbd, so running at normal speed, which is about 1200RPM.

Yes, temps are with TAT.

Lapping is THIS.

Those temps of yours are pretty good then. Although the E6300 generally run a bit cooler from what I've seen, but it varies a bit. No two are going to be identical.

That P180 must be one quiet case then, because on full the Tuniq fan sounded like a lawnmower in my Lian Li A10.

either that, or the fans on the P180 are so LOUD that he cant hear the TT over them.

I'll lap my IHS & Ultra-120 when i get a new mobo (as i'll have to yank the CPU out anyway). Had a practice on my HR-05 NB heatsink last night, not as hard as it seems, but i can see that getting a flat work surface is vital (glass chopping board from my kitchen worked well). did 400, 800 and 1200 grit, and it looks pretty good! Reflects nicely, and the lines from the flatness test look straight.

Mine is overclocked to 2.45Mhz though and has more Volts going it through it.....That probably explains the slightly higher temp.
I really should get a new Sig and put all this in it!

EDIT - The fans on the P180 are all set to Low, so I can't really hear them either.....It really is a brilliant case and I got it last week when they were on 'This Week Only'! What a bargain :D

Wow, more volts for 2.45Mhz?! lol

Try undervolting, i think these conroe's are needlessly overpowered. My E6400 is quite happy to sit at 3Ghz (375x8) with 1.22Vcore with stock vcore being 1.325v Why undervolt you may ask? easy lower temps. I'm nudging 50C full load with dual orthos and only about 44-45C playing BF2142. It's under a Rev1 Ninja with an akasa amber 120mm fan on it. Nice and quiet. Near silent infact. For now i'm happy with 3Ghz, since i've gone off sitting in front of my PC all the time. In the process of doing an engine swap on a 1987 Mini 1000, its getting a B18C4 Honda Vtec dropped in.. Well when i say dropped i really mean squeezed!

my e6600 is running very hot with a tuniq. im assuming its either not mounted correctly - doubtful, or like so many other e6600's its seems...... poor surface on the heat spreader. im not lapping a £200 cpu to drop the temps, its just not worth it.

How hot is 'very hot' exactly?

Not much can go wrong with lapping really. I was wary, but once you get going there's nothing to it. :)

Good idea! I will try your settings when I get home and see if everything's Ok. I ran a monster system stability test through the night last night, and all today  So we'll see how that's done.

Is it totally stable undervolting?

When you guys are quoting Orthos temperatures are you running the Blend test or the Gromacs as the Gromacs runs the CPU substantially hotter and is a better real world test as it simulates running Folding@Home.

I run the CPU only test.....Twice simultaneously, for each core :)

65-70c on both cores @ 3.4ghz/1.4v using intel TAT.

its not lapping that im worried about, its sending it back if i have a problem with it.

65-70c on both cores

WHAT?!?!!??!!?!

That is far too hot....I get scared going over 50, nevermind 70!! Personally I would back that overclock down until you're at least under 60 at full load on both cores.
What cooler are you using?
