Ok, so I've been weighing up the purchase of my Mac Pro, and decided on the following spec;

Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
8GB (4x2GB) *Bought from supplier*
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3
2x 1000GB Samsung Spinpoint Hard Drive *Bought from OcUK*
2x 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
Apple Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard & Mac OS
Apple Cinema HD Display (23" flat panel)
Five USB ports
Two FireWire 400 ports
Two FireWire 800 ports

UPDATED AGAIN!! :D

That's exactly what I'd get (sans ACD)

The money for the faster CPUs is sucker territory.

Would you cry if Vista would only use 3.x GB of your RAM? If so.. it has to be 64bit.

Sounds good, not for the 30" ACD?

No, my workspace is limited, and I've calculated that I'd be sitting about 1.5ft from it!

@ wush, just wondered about 64bit because of the driver support more than anything.

If all looks good I'll pull the trigger tomorrow.

While there's no way I'd drop that much money on a computer I'm still envious. Serious power. :D

I wouldn't know which version of Vista to get either. Will 32bit play nicely with 8GB RAM?

I'll be keeping 1 hard drive for Vista, 1 for OS X and the 320GB (stock) for backups, possibly shove it in the enclosure.

The prices for which you can get 8GB of suitable Mac Pro RAM from certain US suppliers are fabulous. It's pretty crazy when 8GB is thoroughly affordable :)

Apple cinema display, aren't they supposed to be pretty bad quality?

Surely a decent Dell 24" would be a far better and cheaper choice?

AFAIK the situation with availability of drivers for Vista 64 is a lot better than it notoriously was for XP 64. Though I haven't lived with either.

To be honest I'll only be using Windows for the occassional app, it's mainly so I can play the odd game when I've had enough working.

£120 for the OEM Vista Ultimate 64 seems like a good deal :)

sounds like a lovely spec to me EVH, would be keen to hear how you get on gaming with the 8800GT in bootcamp. I'd say the thing would fly! Am toying with the idea of a similar spec myself but buying a new car might suck the budget for the mac pro away.

Upped the CPU and ordered, the savings from the HE purchase helped the decision
