Congrats on the new job. Even more so on the processor bump which will actually 'cause a difference this time. ;)

:p Seemed like a good way to treat myself!

Definitely do a review for the blog, don't worry.

Well it's not a bad way. :D

Have to question why you want 2 TB drives though?

Recording 24 tracks of audio is demanding mmmkay ;)

Probably stick in the 320GB as the boot drive, until I get a better one.

'Cos he is greedy... :p

Great spec EVH, very jealous! When are you getting it?

Oh, that old game. ;)

EVH, do you think it'll be possible that Apple will introduce a Blu-Ray drive to their Pro?

Possibly upgradeable from the current range of Pros and not just in a future model.

I'm almost certain that they'll offer a Blu-Ray drive, but not until the burner's are more affordable.

It would be nice to have them as a BTO option, but at current prices (+Apple's RDF tax) then I couldn't see many people opting for them.

If they do, and it's not introduced with a model refresh then I can see them selling it as a kit on the Apple store (as they've done with the graphics cards for the current series Mac Pro)

Cheers for the reply.

I was going to wait until the next revision for a Pro but I might stump up the courage to go for one at the end of the month. Blu-Ray would be a nice addition to such a powerful machine.

Although I do have one of those 'dreadful' 2707wfp Dell monitors to go with it. ;)

Really nice piece of hardware I have to say.

You can put in your own Blu-Ray drive, and you could burn Blu-Ray media (using Toast), you just cannot watch movies using DVD Player because OS X needs an upgrade to support it.

The frameworks are there, but it needs an update to enable it.

It's actually the main reason why I waited to buy.. I wanted to see what Apple may/may not have added when the store went down!

How fussy are the Mac Pro drives though? They always looked very skinny looking to me. I know the drive operates behind a flap on the casing but the actual flap doesn't look that tall to me.

Although my experiences of that are from a G5. Maybe they've made it a bit more user friendly for 3rd party parts.

I've only ever used G5's, so I wouldn't know.

There's quite a lot of threads on MacRumors with people who've put in their own drives, it might be worthwhile asking for their opinions tbh.

Have Apple ever said anything about how or if they intend to support BluRay playback? They will no doubt have to deal with HDCP/DRM in some way as MS have done in Vista (which they got slated for).

I'm interested as I'm not sure how much existing Apple hardware (especially the Cinema Displays) is HDCP compliant. The iMac (if it could have BluRay fitted internally) would probably be OK as it's a closed system but I'm not sure about the rest of the range. Maybe the GPUs in the current MacPros but what else?

You're correct, OS X needs HDCP/DRM added via an update.

The implementation for Blu-Ray playback is already a part of DVD Player subroutines, but it just doesn't have the DRM in place yet.

I think the Cinema Displays are HDCP compliant, they're advertised as "HD" and they certainly have the resolutions (23" +) but you may have to find clarification on that!

I think the issue for Apple is the use of slot-loading drives.

The drives that I've seen, are all tray-loaders, so Apple would have to find a reliable manufacturer e.g. Sony, and strike a deal with them.

I see no reason why they'd shy away from the HD format, now with HD-DVD dead, seeing as they're a part of the Blu-Ray camp, themselves.

Apple have always seemed to like the HD format. The recent iPhone SDK keynote was available in HD, all of the trailers are and you can rent HD movies (when it happens).

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see a hardware element introduced especially as Blu-ray is the only format now.

Order status just changed to "prepared for shipment", 2 days ahead of schedule :D

What's more, I don't have to start my new job until the 31st = more time home doing nothing = more Mac Pro lovin' time.

Just to reply to your question on Mac Rumours don't bother changing the cooler on the 8800GT when you get it, its silent. The only time you hear it is when it comes out of sleep or you've done a hard reboot.

Ok nice one!

I may re-apply the thermal compound on the stock cooler then, they're usually plastered worse than a scot on a stag do! ;)
