I say no, and have yet to see a tft that can even get close to matching a crt for gaming. All the ones i've bought have been sent straight back.

Only if you have a good reason to, like you're fed up with the size of the CRT or the power it uses, or the picture is dull, or it's bad for your eyes. Don't buy one just because they're fashionable.

A couple of points to consider (on both sides of the debate) -

- TFTs do better black depth in a well lit room
- CRTs do better black depth in a dark room
- CRTs are quicker but that doesn't mean gaming is awful on a TFT
- TFTs show up tearing more and have lower refresh rates
- TFTs are better for your eyes and easier to look at (after adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level)
- TFTs use about 1/3rd the power
- TN Film TFTs have bad viewing angles so if that's an issue go with PVA, MVA or IPS
- CRTs have better viewing angles than even the best TFT
- A TFT will go on a much smaller desk
- TFTs have perfect geometry
- CRTs look just as good in any resolution, whereas TFTs look blurry out of their native resolution
- TFTs have sharper images

That's about it I think. Something to think about anyway.

would you think sli makes any diffrence as thats my current config ?

i've read that to get the best ot of sli then really u need to run @ 1600 x 1200 as a min in games bs or not ?

id say its bs, you can never have enough power, just look how many PCs crumble with Oblivion. SLI gave my PC a much needed performance boost even in 1280x1024. I'm upgrading to a 7950 GX2 now and will still be running at 1280x1024.

Hi there

I think that all this CRT business been better for games over TFT's is absolute rubbish and people just nit picking.

Up until last week I was using a Mitsubishi Pro 900u 19" CRT, probably the best 19" CRT ever released along with a 22" Compaq CRT. Both were exceptional displays.

But an offer came by myself which was too good to miss and I am now using a DELL 3007WFP 30" panel. Its rated as having an 11ms grey-to-grey response time. All I can say is DVD's and Games look far superior. The colours just seem so much more vibrant and obviously the 30" size is damn big but really nice. :D

Now maybe I am fortunate to be using one of the best but I would certainly not go back to my CRTs as this thing is so great and even though its 30" it takes up far less space, is easier on the eyes and watching DVD's and playing games has never been so good.....

Would that monitor be a good choice for using an Xbox 360 with? and would it suppport the xbox 360 top resolution?. Do the PC games not look stretched on it?. I might just take the plunge at christmas and get something along the lines of that monitor, maybe a bit smaller.

im using a x1900XT card..

im so resoloution limited in almost all games.... 50% more performance or more from crossfire would be a waste at 1280x1024.

you really do need a high rez to really see the horsepower SLI or Crossfire can offer.

Im using one of the earliest ViewSonic VX series screens, the 16ms grey to grey VX910. I like to play MMORPG, and RTS games mostly, but I do play shooters sometimes.

I've been totally happy with this screen since the day I bought it. Sure it 'only' does 1280x1024, but the picture quality is fantastic, there is no 'lag' never noticed any serious tearing (the screen can process a 75hz signal which is an improvement over the default 60 imho)

Its sharper, and has a lot more even colours than the screen I had before, a very expensive 21inch NEC XP21. I've also used Iiama CRT's and still think the Viewsonic TFT's better.

Got a chance to try out a friends 24inch widescreen dell TFT, and that really is stunning. I wont ever return to CRT's.

I haven't used this monitor, but have tried out a selection of high end tfts with various games. Ghosting isnt a problem any more, but I still notice textures blur when in motion. To my eyes it looks awful, even on the uber < 3ms screens.

Yeah the texture blur is the reason why I had 2 TFT's that got sent back too, playing racing games I could really notice it and it seriously bothered me, so Im staying with CRT for the time being :)

So these SED monitors, will they be available in large screen sizes like 30" widescreen and look as good as a CRT monitor?. I bet they will be way out of my price range for a long time though :( .

Apparently they're considerably cheaper than lcd and plasma screens to produce.

Either way, a new and better screen technology can't come fast enough - I need a new tv and monitor!

Yes but they dont start mass production till half way through next year.

I think they're aimed more at the TV market than monitors. Last I heard there were no plans to make them in monitor sizes.

Saying peoples opinions are absolute rubbish is a bit strong, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Try you new screen with the lights out (at night) in games that need a true black colour (Thief, Thief 2, also to some extent Doom 3, Fear, Prey etc) and it will come up short like every other LCD. Also the ghosting/texture blur or whatever you want to call it is still bad on the quickest LCDs. Sure you can forget about it and probably rarely notice it (some people aren't observant enough to ever see it), but it is there and easily demonstrated even on 2 ms screens.

Don't get me wrong, I use an LCD myself, but they do have some weaknesses. I don't see the point in denying them.

Theres no doubt they'll make sed monitors, they aren't going to ignore a huge market like that.
Surely they can be used as a monitor even if they are designed as a TV, or will they not be high definition?. Basically i want a good sized screen to play games on my PC and Xbox 360, a 28" CRT TV looks awfull and my 19" CRT monitor will be too small for games in widescreen like xbox 360 games. If SED monitors are designed for games and are high definition then i think i'll wait for them to come out.

They are effectivley a replacement for all current displays, they use crt technology, so there are no response times or bad blacks, they are better than all 3 types of displays and use less power than lcds. They are hd and will be digital. They will definatley make 32" ones and because they use crt tech they will also look good at any res.

I'm yet to be convinced by SED as a concept. It's still firing electrons at a phosphor coated screen, so surely it will still suffer some of the drawbacks of CRTs, like flicker, eye strain and radiation. I know each pixel has it's own electron gun effectively, but they're still only fired once per refresh so they'll be pulsating between bright and dark just like a CRT pixel.

Still it's a step in the right direction, a CRT which doesn't take up tons of space and doesn't use tons of power (the main weaknesses of CRTs).
