CRYSIS vs. The Modern GPU (Part 1)

Great thread, getting somewhat annoyed by all this idiots who think 30fps or lower average is "silky smooth" because from own experience in this title I know it's not, far from it infact.

I'm getting annoyed at all the idiots who haven't seemed to have played the game and just make comments like this, in any other game I might agree with you but Crysis seems smooth to me at or below 30fps.

I have highlighted the important bits as you seem incapable of comprehending them otherwise.

Anyone that thinks 30fps is silky smooth is a noob and doesn't know any better. Stick to the xbox.

TV must really **** you off then, at a laggy 24fps

Very true but stating that 30fps is silky smooth is nonsense.

No it isn't. It's opinion, the ame feels the same at 25fps as it does at 50 to me and to everybody else I know who has played it.

Well, to be honest 30FPS is playable. Though it seems mroe so in DX9 than DX10.

And the occasional drops below 30 are bearable. Its just when it is below 30 for some time that it becomes a problem. Starts giving me a headache.

And the only thing which seems to get 30FPS as a min is dropping the shaders to medium. That is at 1680 x 1050 with rig in sig (heavily OCed).

Note to self: q_shadershadows might be the option to improve shadows when shaders on medium. Yes, that really is just a note to self to try later.

I agree, 30fps is playable but only if it's a stable 30fps with only occasional dips, unfortunately in crysis an average 30fps means your framerate us in the mid to low 20's most of the time.

Yep, if you want a smooth framerate you need to use medium shader or drop the resolution, my minimum is around 30fps at 1366*786 with everything set to high but i'm using an overclocked 8800GTX, 8800GT users will have to go a little lower.

Yes, it's an opinion but it's still nonsense, UT3 running at a constant 62fps is silky smooth, average 30fps or lower in crysis is not and anyone who claims it is clearly doesnt understand the concept of a silky smooth framerate.

I dunno, I find Crysis's gameplay to be quite quirky. I managed to kill a North Korean with a crab scuttling along the beach. :D

You will find that the motion blur compensates for this.

Normally, for me, anything under 40 would be bad in a shooter. In Crysis, it's ok. It's not as fast.

Kind of like Oblivion. There were people who wanted nothing lower than XYZ FPS, but it simply was not necessary as the game speed did not really require it.

30fps is silky smooth for me in crysis, people automatically asume that the game must be laggy when they hear 30fps and the more they think that the more they believe it is.

Games like UT3,GOW,Bioshock and COD4 dont feel smooth at 30. Now I know what silky smooth it, and the fact is for me at 30fps crysis feels pretty silky smooth.

Yes, it's an opinion but it's still nonsense, UT2004 running at a constant 120fps on my CRT is silky smooth, average 30fps is crysis is not and anyone who claims it is clearly doesnt understand the concept of a silky smooth framerate.

What Hz is your CRT running at?

That’s just ridiculous, everyone here has the game and has made an opinion based on gameplay, don't presume we just look at the framerate counter because we think what your saying is BS. :o

FPS is more of an issue on CRT's because of the way the electron gun scans.

TFT's update all the pixels at once I believe.

Interesting. Would be good to find out if all of those who think is is unplayable at 30FPS are using CRT monitors.

Edit: actually, I might have a spare one lying around somewhere. Will give it a try tonight.

I agree, I believe your eye/brain is more sensitive to a higher but fluctuating frame rate than a constant lower one. I find games that run at 60fps+ normally but occasionally dip to 30-40 are more annoying than ones that run at 25-30 constantly. I like to aim for 60fps myself as a rule but to achieve this on Crysis means making it look like Far Cry which I ain't prepared to do.

No, i'm using an LCD, the CRT comment was just an example. :p

Cool. Would have been a pain digging it out :D

I still have to prove to people in soe or other thread that this game is effectively using quad cores.... would have made for a very busy night proving myself right. Which I always am, of course ;)

I think it's all about the motion blur tbh and I think Crytek knew this, it's not there for just as an added effect, it really does give you the impression of smoother frame rate, it's one of the main reasons as to why TV running at only 24 fps looks so smooth, TV has an almost unavoidable motion blur when the camera pans, just pause any film when the camera is panning across in an action scene and you'll see what I mean, computer games do not do this so it is much easier to notice the transition of frames when you move the camera.
