Crysis!

It looks lovely etc etc but I'm in 2 minds as to whether I like the whole 'Maximum strength!' 'Maximum speed!' powerup idea. It obviously will make the gameplay a bit more interesting but for multiplayer I hope you can turn it off. The stealth and physics are what I'm most looking forward to.

My main concern is that gameplay wise it looks no different to Farcry, which was an average shooter.

Most people wouldn't care about that, they will just buy it based on pretty graphics.

Given all it brought to the table in terms of stealth, AI, vehicles... to call it average is a bit odd.

good thing it aint a sequal to farcry then, its just made by most of the same team behind it.

Don't think it had anything new or particularly innovative in it to be honest?

Agree with you there. The game couldn't be more avarege if it tried.
Yea it had pretty GFX for the time, and still does, BUT what was different about it. It just felt as if the difficulty was rammed up high, in stead of intellegent enemies

In terms of new innovative and unique ideas, it seems like a pretty average FPS to me. I think the FPS genre has been done to death and it would be extremely hard, in fact nearly impossible to come up with a brand new fresh idea. It's like trying to make pacman bigger and better, you can add new monsters, new sounds and graphics and a few new features, but it will still be the same old pacman.

Although don't get me wrong, i'm sure Crysis is going to be a blast to play.

I think it's better than average. The GFX aren;t new an shiney now, and I keep going back.

Where as FEAR / PREY took the back burner.

Far Cry is only FPS i've got back to (once completed) since Doom & Goldeneye.

HL2/Fear/Doom3 were good fun to play once, but because they were so linear there was no incentive to play the same levels multiple times. You were basically forced down the same path each time.

With Far Cry you could take different routes to get to the end of the levels (on the outside ones at least). Some of those island levels I must have played about 20-30 times just by using different strategies.

If some of the Crysis levels are designed the same way then I think it'll be great fun. The nice graphics are just a bonus.

what is everyone talking about! It's out this year, end of March at the latest! The game itself uses some serious graphics effects including per-pixel motion blur, DOF (Depth of field), soft particles, real-time soft shadows, cinematic HDR and loads more. It's definately out this year, it think February 30th was the date they were planning on releasing it. It was originally planned for earlier but they are taking a bit longer to make sure it's optimised for as many systems as possible, even low end rigs. It's a month after Vista is released which also means a month after DX10. But you can run Crysis on either DX9 or DX10. DX10 will look better but apparently even the 8800's can't run it in this mode!

The physics are also awesome as well and the game can utilise a Physx processor if it's present or a dual-core if a Physx isn't. Or just the normal single-core which will make it slow down a lot.

It definitely isn't out in a month or two, if they're lucky it'll be out for Christmas, but it could well be early next year.

I'm telling you. Sorry, it's 30th march. Check the release date:

*snip - don't post images of competitor sites*

And the same site has Elite 4 down for release on the 30th March as well, it's the date they use for games where they don't know the release date.

OK, then name me a comparable FPS with the breadth of choice over how to tackle a level... Or in which physics actually matters (besides HL2)... Or the stealth that can be achieved by way of the jungle and such like... Or the variety of vehicles...

No game of recent times has done so much that was new, and done it so well.

But ultimately it still requires you to complete one task to complete a level. If say there was different ways to say cut the power or whatever then that's a true breadth of choice that Farcry doesn't actually offer.

I must have missed that bit.

vonhelmet said:

Nice caveat, I can't think of any other FPS that are jungle set, plenty of other FPS use stealth though.

A boat, buggy and glider, Halo had a variety of vehicles, doesn't necessarily make it a good game.

Enemy AI was poor in my opinion as someone mentioned before, soldiers wouldn't really take cover, lay covering fire that sort of thing that marks out good AI.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Farcry, but give it 5-10 years and it won't be in the same bracket as System Shock2, Deus Ex, Half Life2, Elite or anyother game that considered a classic.

Will I be buying Crysis, yes probably and I'll no doubt enjoy it, but if it doesn't significantly improve on the gameplay then it certainly won't be considered a classic in my opinion.
