Current gen consoles peaked? and are you ready for the next gen?

Yeah, alan wake is pretty much what I'm waiting for. I cant help shake the fact it looks like silent hill, thats a good thing btw, i love silent hill. I think what makes alan wake so great is less about the graphics and more about the weather, day and night effects and the fact its an open world. That and what is no doubt a fantastic storyline.

I have no doubt we're still going to see awesome games, i'm just waiting for the 360 game that amazes me again

I really couldn't care less about a next gen, games now look "good enough" in my opinion, recent games have shown that companies are now really comfortable with the hardware and are being more creative with their output. I'd like to see this continue rather than another gen being forced upon us with the associated typically lack-lustre launch titles and also what will likely be even more crippling development costs that will kill off further studios.

I'm quite happy with this gen to be honest. As long as good games keep getting released i'm happy.
I do agree with what has been said about the PS3 having better looking games than the 360.Nothing compares to uncharted 2.Offering gears 2 as a comparison is laughable.Go play gears 2 now,it pales in comparison.Although Alan Wake does look rather good.

Agreed, in one of the more recent trailers at a point where Alan is lit up, you can actually see some of the irregularities in the stitching of his tweed jacket*. It just looks ridiculously detailed and absolutely beautiful to match - even if the game itself isn't very good, I could easily see it resetting the graphical bar for this console generation.

*See this video:

Err, it looked nice but wasn't anything compared to uncharted. I'm not sure what the tweed jacket statement was supposed to mean, so the main characters jacket is fairly high res? You can see kratos' pores.

Uncharted 2, killzone 2 and now god of war 3 are the best looking games I have played on any platform. I haven't played gears of war 2 but that would probably be up there too mind.

Oh and the characters faces in heavenly sword still make me go wow everytime I see them (and that game is ooold now).

In my opinion >

WII - Yes peaked long ago.
PS3 - Going by some recent/future releases I'd say there's a fair bit more to come yet.
360 - Seen some clips of future releases and it would appear some developers have found a little untapped power gfx wise.

The only thing a 'next generation' would bring right now, apart from higher specs and higher prices, would be higher game development times and costs. I don't see what a new machine could bring right now. That said, I also don't think a new generation is needed yet.

boom

nail on head. people are struggling with costs when developing for this gen. for example FF developers blaming its lack of openness on time and costs , GT developers adding more and more details constantly etc. i wouldnt expect next gen for quite a while... its not a race

hell the mainstream high street shops still sell ps2 games !

I was just going to mime what Memphis said before I read his post

Are we are the peak? Yes we are, to go further we need to advance beyond blu-ray, which means better hardware, which means more time to develop, and we are at a stage now where it comes down to cost, and it is nowhere near worthwhile for the big companies like Sony/Microsoft to invest in this next gen technology because they would not make any profit as they would need to charge probably over £1000 for each system, then you would need a next-gen TV to go with it.

So don't looks for next-gen any time soon, I don't see PS4 out for another 3-4 maybe even 5 years down the line.

and there was absolutely nothing about Alan Wake that made me WOW.

The PS3 never sat right with me anyhow. It was a botch job, and nothing like the initial design spec. One less cell + the RSX which was added at the last minute (and not that great either).

I'd quite like to see a PS4 sooner than later, so they can put the mistakes of the PS3 behind them and actually make the console they wanted to.

The PowerVR + Power7 rumours are interesting.

This couldn't be any further from the truth, have you seen Halo 3 lately? In comparison to something like the lush looking gow or mw2 :D
I'm not ready for next gen yet and neither is my wallet :(

I didn't mean graphically peaked. I was talking about hype and media that surrounded the release of Halo 3. That was the biggest time in the 360's life span so far. Can you honestly see any other game on the 360 making such an impact as Halo 3 did.

Did anyone play AC2 on 360 or Forza 3 ?
Graphically, they are both up there with anything on PS3 imvho :)

AC2 came out on the PS3 as well.

From all the games I've played this gen, Uncharted 2 is probably the best looking game atm. Heavy Rain's facial animation is also pretty amazing.

Read what Rob actually said, when he says peaked he means in terms of hype and media attention. Halo 3 is certainly it's peak, hell i'd say it was the peak of any gaming medium ever, i don't know of a title before or after that has received so much attention and such huge sales on release.

I would like to see the current crop around for another couple of years before the next gen takes over. Means I don't need to invest in new hardware :p I don't think the graphics will get that much better, but I'm happy with them the way they are. I've always got my PC if I really need better graphics. Gameplay is more important for me, and so far, I'm happy with what my 360 offers.

One thing that I would like to see on the next gen stuff, is vsync in all games. Maybe I'm over sensitive to it, but most 360 games have screen tearing, and while it doesn't ruin a game, it'd look better without it.

This generation peaked = definately not.
X360 arrived earlier so is due to peak sooner and I think Microsoft are however lacking in "IPs"
Weve had several sequels on X360 now but Sony seem to have better performing "IPs" but then of course in fairness the console brand is much older and established.
Microsoft need a new "IP" to replace Halo, PGR, Forza, Mass Effect and Gears have all done well but again something new is now needed.

I wouldnt say PS3 has peaked yet when games like Uncharted 2 / GOW 3 / graphically are setting very high standards for consoles.
Heavy Rain used "six axis" in a way that actually worked as a gameplay mechanic and is a cracking game experience.
Little Big Plannet allowed so much user creation/interaction and "Mod Nation" racers will continue this trend in a Mario Kart type of game.
How many more years will it take for a racing game on a console to better GT5?
People are quick to criticse its long development yet we could imagine it may take several more years after its release before another racing game betters it, such will be the level of what it achieves in content and on technical ability. I also believe the release of GT5 will be the Peak for PS3 to date then again some will say Im just being biased but I firmly believe the HYPE and expectations for the game will be higer than any currently released title for the platform.

Furthermore hardware innovations like "Move" and "3DTV" are going to ensure PS3 will not peak for a few years yet and the possibility of both those technologies offering 3D movement and 3D vision @ 120Hz is almost like a "new next gen" on current "next gen", anyone agree?

The whole Natal, Move situation has ensured this Gen will go on longer than normal. Thats what Sony and MS hope anyway, im not sure how well they will do, but one thing for sure is that they will be a big part of the next gen of consoles. I do expect new handhelds out in the next year or so, both the PSP and DS could both be shown at E3/TGS if rumours are correct.
All I need is GT5 and the new team ICO game to come out and i will have had my current Gen gaming fix.
