Currys supplied wrong camera

I don't have a clue about Canon model numbers these days so don't know how much better one is than the other, but wouldn't the warranty be with the manufacturer not the retailer anyways?

The warranty will indeed be with Canon, but if a fault occurs and you arrange an RMA, Canon will want a copy of the invoice as proof of purchase. They will smell a rat when they see that the invoice has a different model of camera.

To add to my post... after offering to put them in contact with the person you gifted the camera to, highlight that this is extremely embarrassing for you and ask for compensation in the form of gift vouchers or camera equipment.

Tell them you gave the item as a gift and can no longer return it but you're willing to accept their mistake and would happily take the 1000d they should have supplied

The warranty directly with the manufacturer should still be intact. I'm not sure how the warranty information is stored on their system, i seem to remember it was just name/address. obviously this could be a bit of a concern if you take it in and its been flagged for some reason.

So i guess if you're happy possibly not needing the warranty then ignore it. But if you feel you may need to take it back, this may prove difficult later on.

Generally with shop mix ups its their problem once (a) payment has been made in full for the item you thought you were buying (b) the goods have been handed over (for online stuff this is the act of dispatching the item).

Warranty could be an issue as even Canon might require proof of purchase and the shop is perfectly within their right to say - your receipt is for X but your trying to return us Y which isn't the item the warranty is for.

I'd say surely Curry's would loose out by having it returned as it would then be a used product. But I've bought a TV from Curry's before that had clearly been returned in the past.

What would be morally right would be telling them to shove it up their **** so long as you can live without the warranty.

From experience, they may send another letter or two. And then more than likely drop it. Happens way more often than you think..

Generally serial numbers are not recorded at any point during the transaction, thus there would be no way for the store to identify the exact model that you were given in error.

The only issue is when you send a canon into repair (usually Colchester camera repair), they will want proof of purchase. And the error may flag if they actually look at the receipt.

Would everyone be quite so eager to shout "keep it!" if the question was about OCUK sending someone a 780GTX instead of a 680?

Just to clarify though, I would tell them it was a gift and be secretly thinking that they can stick their letter where the mice won't get at it.

There's nothing they can do either way. The error is on the part of the person that sold you it. They can jog on.

I think it is different if it is delivered as it could be a shipping error. In the same way you couldn't claim it falls under the unsolicited goods legislation.

In the shop, the person serving you made a choice to sell you the camera in his/her hand to you for £x. They can't later claim they actually sold it to you too cheaply.

^ I think if it was a wrongly dispatched OcUK purchase then it wouldn't be appearing in these forums. :p

They might send a few more letters, but they will stop. :)

I remember years ago i went to buy a Syncmaster T200 from currys, paid for it, about £150 i think, only on my way home did i realize they gave me the Syncmaster T200HD which is a monitor/TV combo which was retailing at £250 at the time.

It's still sat here now :D

Wow 2 pages and not one do the right thing. Yay for GD.

I'll be recommending she didn't get the letter.

Cheers I'll follow up if anything arises

I had a similar thing happen to me this week. Got quoted £25 per sq m for some flooring, then got charged £25 per pack. Saved nearly a £100. Nice

Nice! Seriously **** Currys, they're easily one of the worst retailers around. Keep the camera and enjoy it as it's their fault. As for warranty you can ignore them as I'm sure you can get it covered directly with Canon. In fact I would never recommend getting anything replaced under warranty from Currys and go straight to the manufacturer- if you value your items.

As you can tell I despise the entire Dixons group and can't understand why people still buy from their stores when items can be found cheaper elsewhere, but more importantly, at places with good after sales support that don't try and fob you off.

That little rant felt good :D

I can't provide proof, but i'm sure something like this has happened once with ocuk and the customer was just told to keep it. I think ocuk is the kind of company that'd just hold its hands up and say we made a mistake, you win, thats ok.
