Currys supplied wrong camera

The warranty will indeed be with Canon, but if a fault occurs and you arrange an RMA, Canon will want a copy of the invoice as proof of purchase. They will smell a rat when they see that the invoice has a different model of camera.

This. You need a valid uk receipt for the warranty, if the camera is the wrong model they won't do any repairs for free.

I would tell them that they need to send the replacement camera to your home address along with a box and prepaid delivery for the old camera with pickup arranged by the courier. Once you have received the replacement camera of the correct model then you will put the wrong model in their provided packaging and leave it on your doorstep for collection.

See if they accept that. It is their mistake and they should cover the expenses and not force you to go it of your way.

Would everyone be quite so eager to shout "keep it!" if the question was about OCUK sending someone a 780GTX instead of a 680.

Not OCUK but from a competitor, I ordered a 24" Samsung Monitor (cracking piece of kit). Exactly one year later to the day , i got another one! Checked my bank statements and nothing, so i presumed they must have made an order error and one year before it said 2009 instead of 2008. Kept in the box for a couple of weeks and when no contact was made i gave it to my dad

No you don't you need proof of purchase. They could just show a bank statement for the purchase which would not show the model.

There is no law stating currys even have to give a receipt out.

What are Curry's going to do with the returned camera? There's no way it can be sold as new.
I've also just had a look on their website and the 1000D isn't available anymore as it's an old model.

I had an RMA with a competitor, I got the motherboard refunded, bought another one.

Few weeks later they sent me my old board back.

I did the "right" thing, although I had to chase them over the course of a few days to get them to collect it, they failed to arrange a courier the first time round (After telling me they had)

Proper pain in the bum.

It was a 170 quid motherboard too.

Currys are useless with this.

I ordered a TV (in store) a few years back, it happened to be a 32" Samsung. As the finance was being arranged on the TV the warehouse guy picked up the TV and loaded it in to the car for me. It wasn't until I got home and unpacked the TV that I noticed it was the same model but in 37". I did not want the inconvenience of not having a TV until I got the chance to go back down to the Currys store so I just set the thing up as normal.
However, I did eventually go back to the store a week later with my receipt because of warranty etc and the receipt showing different than I had. They turned out to be totally cool with it. In fact they admitted their stock didn't add up and were wondering where it went. Instantly they apologised and rectified the receipt to the correct model and gave me a £50 gift voucher.

I would still go in, but with the receipt only. Its their fault and in no way yours so the inconvenience should not be put on you. Ask them to change it and be done with it.

If you decide not to then I wouldn't worry - claim ignorance. What proof do they have that it was actually you they did the mix up with?

Awww poor girl, why don't you go steal her a new TV too, after all she's due some good fortune at someone else's expense.

well yes the warranty will be voided and if anything goes wrong they won't touch it. other than that, they can't forcefully appear and take it back.

I doubt Canon would void the warranty because a shop accidenttly gave someone the wrong camera...

If it's one of those extended warranty hobby just chalk it down to experience and never buy one again...

amazing how dishonest people are when in their favour yet cry EU law, DSR any consumer BS if they go 1p out of pocket..
just saying :)
poor sales guy probably lost this months bonus, mwhahahaa.

It's more about getting one over on the big guy. We bend over backwards and take it in many cases so on the occasion it actually goes in our favour it's something that should be jumped on.

For example if it was the other way round and you bought a 100D but received a 1000D there is no way Curries would say "sorry, our mistake" and swap it.

It'd be a very different situation for many if the shop wasn't an international chain with a really poor customer service record. If it was a small independent I'd wager most would say to give it back.

Canon warranties on cameras require a receipt of purchase from within the UK. The warranty is localised and they need to know the purchase was done with a UK retailer and yes, they will need proof of what the purchase is, otherwise you could buy any old thing from a UK store and claim it as proof that the camera was purchased in the UK.

I thought it was ok not to have a receipt as long as you had the warranty card that came with it?

Yes but canon will want a proof of purchase that shows date, the store and the model.

Considering I work for them I know how canons warrranty works. They would just refuse to fix it if you didnt supply a proper POP. If you send it without one and fail to provide it they will charge a holding fee too for wasting their time.

OP. How much of a difference in the camera models is there? And what was the price difference. Do the smart thing and offer a % of the difference to keep the 100D

If it had been the other way around, would you hesitate to take it back and get the better camera that you should have been given in the first place? I'm sure you'd have been there like a shot demanding it be rectified and informing them of your "rights" as a customer.

The same should apply here, but I'd contact them first and tell them that you'd be happy to return it, but as it is their error that you expect to be compensated for time and fuel costs. Or, they can ship you the new camera and you can replace it with the one that you were given.

Honestly, I can't believe how many people here are like "sod the shop, their mistake, keep it, you're entitled to it". No, you're not entitled to anything and I'm sure if they were to take it further, a court of law would rule in their favour. Also, you're going to need a valid receipt to get any sort of warranty repair by Canon. If Currys inform Canon that your receipt is invalid (far fetched I know, but who knows what they might do) you might end up with nothing in the event of a repair.
