Thing is a lot of people used to be in game development for a love of the job and a passion for it in a different way to a lot of the people who do it now more of a career - the pre-launch crunch was something that people did almost voluntarily - now for a lot more it is basically a career and a pre-launch crunch at that level smacks of poor management (though a certain amount will be needed leading up to any product launch).
Many of the devs won't have the same attachment to the game as would have been the case 10+ years ago, etc.
