*** Cyberpunk 2077 ***

Thing is a lot of people used to be in game development for a love of the job and a passion for it in a different way to a lot of the people who do it now more of a career - the pre-launch crunch was something that people did almost voluntarily - now for a lot more it is basically a career and a pre-launch crunch at that level smacks of poor management (though a certain amount will be needed leading up to any product launch).

Many of the devs won't have the same attachment to the game as would have been the case 10+ years ago, etc.

There's a lot of truth in that. I know a few people that used to work for a very large game developer. It all changed after MS bought them out, very corporate, not the fun place it used to be. I think everyone of them left. I think there is a distinction between the small privately owned companies and big corporations but it's got a lot harder for the small guys now.

All that said they are getting paid and have a job. I've been furloughed since April with a 20% cut to fairly average wage. You've just got to make the best of it or move if you don't agree company policy. In this case is a massive launch do understandable. More telling will be how they operate after the launch.

I hope this isn't a mess on launch. It sounds like they are struggling to meet this deadline.

I personally wont be buying the game. I don't support what the dev has done with the crunch, so they won't get my money. Pre-order cancelled.

Let's be honest, you be playing it within the first 2 days of release.

I've got several friends who work in the games industry. Games are what they do, and in a few cases, all they do. I've never heard any of them complain.

However, it's good that there's public scrutiny of these sorts of practices, and questions asked.

On the other hand, there's less scrutiny of unfair working practices and reward for other professions- the emergency services for example. Constant horribly long days and stress are considered "normal", and they're not producing games, so I'm going to try and keep a healthy perspective here.

Shout out to all the qa engineers who are also probably up late at night automating tests to ensure they don't release a pile of crap.

Would be nice to actually see a game where qa has been done for once. I've lost count of how often I've played a game and thought "how on earth did that ever get through testing without anyone noticing it"

Yeah speaks volumes as to what the gaming industry counts as a 'minimum viable product' these days.

Don't blame QA though; chances are they've already identified most of the bugs we see when a game is released but it's not their decision whether to fix them prior to the release or not.

Buying a game on day 1 or even week 1 these days means you are a beta tester, sad fact.

Can you throw away all items in your house made in China including pc components produced through much more abusive system than what Polish game studio did.

Why are people crying about this? getting paid 50% extra for the O.T. Sounds terrible. Im sure they wish they were all at Amazon in the warehouse.

Mainly because of the contradiction from the boss himself about crunch. I couldn't care less tbh, I work on a crunch schedule nearly weekly. **** needs doing and someone needs to do it so...
