I'd say there's a resonable chance he could get a medal.
IMO the fact that he tried to get into a break in the scratch race rather than sit in and wait for a sprint shows that he might be quite confident in his ability.

Well, that's just confirmed it!
He's definitely on form. Should be good for flying lap + 1k time trial too but the points race can be a bit of luck involved.

Cavendish just catch the other guy?

Yep, he did.
There's 2 riders on track at a time but it's not 1v1 like the sprint races were. Everybody rides to record a time.

Although he did get a small advantage from being in the slipstream of the other rider for a few seconds.

A few guys near the top overall went out early. Cav went out about 8th.
Remains 3rd overall. Viviani overall leader.

Cavendish overtook on the inside or something like that and got disqualified.

I *think* he was eliminated rather than disqualified - so he still gets ranked for the position he was eliminated.

He overtook on the blue bit at the bottom of the track and wasnt riding on the wooden boards so that's why he was eliminated. He knew what he was doing - he was going to be last and was boxed in with nowhere to go so chanced it in the hope that the judges wouldn't spot him.

Usually neither of them will want to open their sprint from the start because it's 3 laps and the other rider would just tuck in behind for 2.5 laps and easily come round at the end after saving so much energy.

So both riders want to be behind at the start but the one higher up the track has an advantage because they can slowly roll down the banking and keep their balance. The rider at the bottom needs to pedal a little to get moving.
(They are not allowed to come to a complete stop)

I reckon Cav is good for a medal in the omnium but more than a few people have cocked up the points race from a good position since the event format changed. Should be an exciting race and Cav should do well in the remaining individual events.

I'm a bit late in catching up but a great performance by Jason Kenny to move to five gold medals, Calum Skinner was maybe a bit naive in the first race of the final but rode the second one well and he is definitely one for the future.

Here's hoping that Cavendish gets a medal to add to his very impressive career collection, any colour would be good at this stage.

Also good performances by the British women's sprinters so hopefully there's another medal or two for Team GB from them too.
