Delighted for him wish it was gold but I'm sure when he looks back he will be pleased hell of a season he's had when many myself included thought he was washed up!

Cav should be happy with Silver, he was never going to take Gold off of Viviani after his mistake in the elimination race. He should also consider himself lucky to not be penalised for causing the crash that took Viviani down and the HK rider out.

Laura Trott was simply stunning. Hope she can keep it up tomorrow.

Anyone think Cavendish should have been disqualified from the race after causing that crash? I usually root for the British person, but I was actually glad he didn't get the gold after seeing that.

And did he put one of the other riders in the hospital with that crash? Disgusting.

Well I don't think it was deliberate, just poor awareness, so dunno if "disgusting" is fair. The points race is pretty chaotic and there's often crashes. Viviani himself nearly caused a repeat in almost exactly the same way later in the race.

But yes, I wouldn't have been surprised if they had disqualified him, but I guess the officials saw it as an accident and not deliberate.

how that was reported in France, as opposed to biassed interpretation on BBC eg Radio4 today

Mark Cavendish won the silver medal in the omnium at the Olympics 2016. A performance marred by provoking a terrible fall. Unlike the French swimmer Aurelie Muller disqualified Monday morning in open water, the British received his medal ...

Must be a star to keep his medal? Silver medalist in the omnium Monday at the Olympics in 2016, Mark Cavendish was originally a heavy crash in the points race. The Briton completely off course, sending him flying Sang-hoon Park in the race leader, Elia Viviani.

Three men went to the ground. If the Italian could finally start to win the gold medal, South Korea had to be evacuated on a stretcher. Cavendish, he went at the end of the race to eventually finish second in the race. No action was taken against him. Yet the winner of 30 stages of the Tour de France has a particularly questionable behavior on the action, throwing a glance at South Korea before coming to the hit ...

How not to compare this case to one involving Aurélie Muller during the women's 10 kilometer open water in the morning? The French first obtained the silver medal before, she had disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior shoving his Italian rival in the final sprint. The officials have analyzed the final to judge its right place is quite normal. But that light is made in the same way in all disciplines and all athletes is just as.

Well that report is biased too. Every national news outlet tends to be, including the BBC of course.

Difference is that Cavendish didn't deliberately cause the crash, in the same way that Rupp didn't deliberately trip Mo Farah in the 10k. Things happen.

The outdoor swimming incident was rather different, there was clear wrestling / grappling going on right at the line.

Becky James in to the sprint semis, knocking out the current world champion. Now to see if Katy Marchant can join her.

edit: job done. :)
