Cyclists on pavements, do police really care?

Just stick your foot out by accident as they cycle by. It works a treat. ;)

See, I prefer a loud "Boo!" as I cycle round someone walking on a cycle path... ;)

Im sure the police would do something if it was actually affecting anyone.

Cycling at 10 miles an hour on an empty footpath next to a busy road is totally different to cycling madly through a busy town centre. I'm sure the police realise that and apply the law when it is needed, much like when you are speeding they may not stop you if it's only a minor transgression on a safe road...

(No I don't cycle on the pavements, I haven't cycled in ages as there are too many yobo motorists around where I live).:(

To be honest, if they're wobbling around I prefer they're on the pavement. In my opinion it should be required by law to be wearing a helmet if you're cycling on the road.

The sort of accidents a helmet provides protection in, aren't usually the sort of accidents involving a car. It only really protects in low-impact situations (like falling off your bike). Think about karate proponents chopping tiles - hit it hard and you go straight through; hit it gently and the tile stops your hand.

A study a couple of years ago noted that cars drive closer to cyclists who wear a helmet (drivers, presumably, feeling helmet-wearers are less of a risky overtake) - suggesting they would actually have a negative safety impact.

I have to put up with the Brighton Taliban every day, the cycle path east to west on the upper promenade is used as the 7th stage of the tour de France with lycra loonies trying to beat their personal best every day. They don't seem to be able to read clear road signs i.e. their need to give way and charge through give way, markings. If it were me not giving way in my car to a cyclist I'm sure they'd start a Facebook hate campaign.

Any police around = no

The ones that don't stop at red lights especially at pedestrian crossings **** me off. Also the ones that mount the pavement to avoid a red light then just dart back into the road without checking if it is clear. I will purposely knock one off one day.

There's so much hate for cyclists. It's pathetic, frankly.

Just recently I watched a guy wind his window down to shout 'boo' (actually some profanity) at a cyclist he was overtaking on a busy road. He thought it was hilarious.

I think some people would just prefer that everybody drove everywhere, so they make life as unpleasant as possible for people attempting to walk or cycle.

Hint: it's not the walkers or the cyclists who are borderline retarded.

I only want it because it would make the yobs who stand up whilst riding jumping off pavements and using pavements when the lights red get the hell off the road. I'm perfectly fine with cyclists who ride properly it's the kids and the ones that wobble about that do my head in. It's dangerous and impedes progress.

I was in the Cotsworlds yesterday, there was a cycle event on, all the cyclists were kitted up rode properly and there was nothing wrong with it. The amount of kids here who jump off the pavement right in front of you without looking over their shoulders is ridiculous. Roll on louder exhaust, maybe they wont do it then.

I think the problem is that cyclists are thought of as being selfish and hypocritical. They claim car drivers should treat them as per the rules, then flout all road rules when it suits them. They complain how they are treated badly on the roads, so ride on the pavement and treat pedestrians in the same way they are complaining about.

And it's not just a few bad apples, there's a lot of selfish and ignorant cyclists out there bitching about car drivers and then ******** on pedestrians when it suits them. No wonder they get a bad rep from it.

Some places are just not suitable for cycles, so asking the world to change around them is never going to work.

maybe if ....

cyclists didn't wobble all over the road trying to carry 2 bags of shopping on the end of the handlebars

used cycle paths instead of doing boardman impressions on unsuitable roads (hence why there's cycle paths)

paid attention to road signs and traffic lights

dress in black and have no lights at night

The thing is it can potentially affect someone, and potentially very seriously.

Like this for example:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...d-hit-run-cyclist-outside-Blackpool-home.html

The "why aren't you catching real criminals" line only really works for weed smokers, which in itself really has no effect on anyone.

So a single isolated incident - lets compare that to how many cyclists are killed cycling on the road every day shall we?

Yup, a really awesome idea, if you want to (pick one or more of the below):

A) injure your foot
B) have your face smashed into the pavement repeatedly
C) be charged with assault/manslaughter

Edit: No, I'm not a cyclist.

Used to be, and I used to stick to the rules, although there were a few roads I would refuse to ride on due to the volume of traffic and road layouts, so I would nip on the pavement, but ride very carefully and dismount if I was passing anyone.

I don't cycle any more as there are too many idiots in cars and there's no realistic off-road provision for bikes, despite the govt's apparent desire to get people out of their cars.

I noticed this too when i was using no helmet and helmet. But its better wear one because the old mentality, better to wear something than nothing at all.

Oh yes those excellent logistically placed and maintained cycle paths that are so prominent in the UK….Do you by chance live in the Netherlands?

The UK really needs a cultural revolution regarding cycling. We would all benefit more if the infrastructure was there for safer cycling. It would also hopefully bring about a change in attitude.
