Cyclists two abreast on busy 'A' road, selfish?

66

You should

keep both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear
keep both feet on the pedals
never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends
not ride close behind another vehicle
not carry anything which will affect your balance or may get tangled up with your wheels or chain
be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially sighted pedestrians. Let them know you are there when necessary, for example, by ringing your bell if you have one. It is recommended that a bell be fitted.
was it narrow, busy or a bend ?

Isn't it illegal? I always thought they should be single file when on the road
We can drive down the centre of the lane if we determine it to narrow for a car to safely overtake or when we feel it's safer for us such as at a round about when you want cars to clearly see and know which way you are heading.

cars do not have right of way over cycles we are considered vehicles on the road the same as cars etc
The 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of the United Nations considers a bicycle to be a vehicle, and a person controlling a bicycle (whether actually riding or not) is considered an operator.
we signed that convention

they do it all over surrey - utter £$%^s. I'm as much a cyclist as I am car user but find the increasing levels of arrogance displayed by cyclists pretty infuriating.

But then you should you not be giving as much room as a small car when overtaking a cyclist, so surely two a breast would be the same space as a small car? I know I prefer to give cyclists as much room as possible when overtaking, I bet it's terryfing having someone overtake you at a foot away.

Its perfectly legal to cycle two abreast and is the advised thing to do.

As Arknor posted from the Highway Code above, it is recommended that you ride in single file on busy roads, but ultimately thats all subjective as to how busy the road is and the speed of the other traffic.

If they were causing a tailback for 10 miles, then yes, they should really be single file.

However, if it simply caused you to have to slow down and make an overtake without causing much issue for traffic, then its not really any different to having to overtake a slow moving vehicle. In many ways I think you could argue that cyclists two abreast on fast roads is actually safer, as there are many motorists in this country who leave far too little room when you have individual cyclists or single file.

This thread however looks set up to be the monthly cyclist rant thread.
Can I summarise it now with the fact that there are bad Motorists, Cyclists and Pedestrians.

at the time not overly busy but they were still causing traffic to back up for no reason really, not the first time I have saw this and like others have said it does seem very selfish, and imho is probably more dangerous.

Just bad manners,

When i cycle with friends, we'll cycle as a group, and split down into a line if traffic is heavy or we're holding people up...

I drive a car too so see it from both sides... but manners is all it boils down to...

I have every right to drive down the centre of a lane and block traffic from over taking me as long as I'm not going so slow that a car would be pulled over for dangerous driving. (not that I do this I realise in any collision regardless of fault I'm the one likely to die so I show other vehicles the respect they deserve and hope to receive the same treatment in return)

for all intents and purposes cycles are considered to be a vehicle the same as you.
It's particularly annoying on small country lanes. I followed a pair of cyclists the other day, two abreast, for 3 or 4 miles at 15 mph before they eventually let me pass.
Maybe they weren't aware you were there if you had beeped your horn just a little from a safe distance they would likely have gave you room.

even at 10mph it can be hard to hear if a vehicle is behind you until they start to overtake you because of the noise from the wind
