Cyclists two abreast on busy 'A' road, selfish?

Just bad manners,

When i cycle with friends, we'll cycle as a group, and split down into a line if traffic is heavy or we're holding people up...

I drive a car too so see it from both sides... but manners is all it boils down to...

This is exactly the issue, same as with neighbours who let their dogs bark incessantly etc. Maybe a eugenics program needs introducing then we`ll all be left with nice and polite people like us.

imho it forces numerous unnecessary overtakes, and imho the cumulative effects of this adds to more risk of collisions etc than if cyclists were single file, imho of course.

Firstly there is the chance that one hits the other and he falls into an overtaking car.

Secondly there is a chance that if a large vehicle is coming the other way its quite tight.
 
That's why overtaking cars are supposed to give enough room when over taking. If there isn't sufficient room to overtake then wait until there is.

Even if the cyclists were single file its still an overtake.

Yeah, thats what I was getting at in my earlier post.
Its arguably safer for Cyclists because it forces the driver to treat them like a slower moving vehicle and overtake the width of what could be a car.

Where as when its a cyclist in single file, you will find many motorists will overtake and leave no room at all. This is despite the highway code saying you must give the same width as a motor vehicle when making an overtake.

I myself got forced to jump onto a grass verge last weekend when an idiot coach driver overtook me on an A road and didn't leave any room so I was being squeezed in the kerb. Its pretty frightening when you have a ton of steel baring down on you.

Seems the best place for it if a bike is to be treated the same as a car.

Yet we have a Sports forum for things like Cycling, so its in unclassifiable ground really. Thats why these threads usually stay in GD.
 
I find that regardless of if i ride in the gutter or farther out into the road there are some drivers that pass you within an inch of your life anyway. Tbh the majority give you plenty of room. I had a guy overtake me a few days ago only to slam his brakes on as he came to a sharp left hand bend in the road, this caused me to brake hard too to avoid slamming into the back of him. When i confronted him his reply was " i cycle too". I was like "what kind of a reply is that for your crap driving". Its not like he didn't know the bend was there as he lived a little further down the road. Some drivers take a risk and overtake or pullout and its always at the expense of the cyclist. They wouldn't do it if it was a car infornt or even a horse rider !

whilst I take your point/s in the real world there are many instances where we all have to compromise, huge lorries hanging over the white line happens all the time and we all have to move over a bit giving up some of our side of the road.Personally I wouldn't do it if cycling, and in 30yrs of motorcycling I would never think of doing it and holding other people up etc.
