Cyclists two abreast on busy 'A' road, selfish?

Wheres your road tax :D

I suspect you realise no such thing exists anymore and VED doesn't pay for the roads local councils do :D
Vehicle tax was introduced in the 1888 budget and the current system of excise duty applying specifically to motor vehicles was introduced in 1920. This excise duty was ring-fenced for road construction and was paid directly into a special Road Fund from 1920 until 1937 after which it was treated as general taxation.[ Even during this period the majority of the cost of road building and improvement came from general and local taxation due to the tax being too low for the upkeep of the roads.

I think it is velo selfish. They need their headsets examined. A chain-ge of atti-tube is required.

This thread is wheelie interesting. I'm going to saddle up and enjoy the ride before it becomes too tyreing.

Are we all pretending that this is not 'discussed' every single week? It's the same stupid bun fight every time and by God I'm not going to stop reading.

We've already had road tax mentioned. Insurance can't be far behind!

for all intents and purposes cycles are considered to be a vehicle the same as you.

Maybe they weren't aware you were there if you had beeped your horn just a little from a safe distance they would likely have gave you room

even at 10mph it can be hard to hear if a vehicle is behind you until they start to overtake you because of the noise from the wind

Ok I'm gonna bite on a little bit of hypocrisy here...you claim that a bike is classed as a vehicle and that the rider is the operator, this I am not disputing. What i am going yo say though is that the operator of a vehicle should be aware of his/her surroundings at all times.

impossible on a bike unless you have eyes in the back of you head or want to keep taking your eyes off the road every few seconds to look behind.

theres a reason why most cyclists wear bright/reflective clothing and often even in the day have there lights flashing when they are on busy roads the traffic around us can move so fast we can't know where everyone is at all times we can only position our self in the safest place on the road which at times means driving down the centre of a lane

Last night in Poole a young girl was hit by a cyclist who failed to stop after the accident. The young girl is in a critical condition, but hey nothing should stop cyclists getting the best possible time for their race right?

That's really funny because as a cyclist myself I am fully capable of being aware of my surroundings, its easy you see because your neck can rotate because evolution is a wonderful thing and realised that we may need to look behind us. Please don't tell me that you're one of the cyclists that suddenly moves to the middle of the road to turn right without looking? But given your arrogance in this thread I'd say you are, which gives the rest of us a bad name.

Do you have a screw lose? maybe a moderator needs to torque some sense into you before the training wheels come off and I'm sick of people like you that keep trying to derailer a topic!

No of course I check behind before I make any moves that could endanger my life.

Maybe you can look behind you all the time but I find it distracting and as long as you ride in a predictable manner with no sudden movements looking behind you all the time isn't really a priority watching for potholes is.

if I need to move into the lane more or try to turn off the road of course I look and signal before doing so so people behind are aware of what I'm about to do rather than just pulling across the lane and cutting someone up who can't stop his 2 ton block of metal from crushing me.

also if your on a road bike with your riding position I guess it's a lot less movement to look behind on a hybrid in an upright position you pretty muich have to twist your whole torso.

BTW so far I have had zero issues with cars and no one has beeped at me or passed me in an unsafe way so I must be doing something right

As tragic as that is, its hardly representative of all cyclists is it?

I'm sure I don't need to point out how the same thing happens far more readily with motor vehicles and how significantly greater accidents are in general each day with them.

What's with the strobe style lights I'm seeing a lot of cyclists using ATM

Ruddy distracting when their riding toward you

Oh and as for above I hope they catch the cyclist and throw the book at him or her

Just bad manners,

When i cycle with friends, we'll cycle as a group, and split down into a line if traffic is heavy or we're holding people up...

I drive a car too so see it from both sides... but manners is all it boils down to...

This, pretty much. I ride alongside friends on quiet roads and we go single file as soon as vehicles approach.

even at 10mph it can be hard to hear if a vehicle is behind you until they start to overtake you because of the noise from the wind

Seriously?

I don't think I've ever been unaware of a vehicle approaching from behind even at high speeds. A quick turn of the head every now and then is all it takes to defeat wind noise.

That's the point. A flashing light is easier to distinguish with your peripheral vision, so it makes the chances of a cyclist being missed by a driver pulling out of a junction much lower.
