Cyclists

Going home yesterday I'm cycling between two rows of parks cars well clear of the door zone on both sides (so in the middle of the road). I saw a Mini heading towards the row of parked cars from the far end, seeing as I had already entered the row of parked cars and thus had right of way. As I was doing a good lick (about 20mph) I thought I'd be out of the cars way soonish and all he would need to do was slow down a little.

What did he do? Move to the middle of the road, speed up and aim at me. I held my ground and he is giving me gestures and abuse. I calmly pointed out my right of way and carried on.

I get this kind of behaviour all the time. Far more than the bad cycling examples I see.

wait wait wait...So is this a single road lane or what? Or just a tight road? I'd be inclined to move over atleast, just because really :p

This morning on my commute I was coming up to a roundabout that required me to be in the middle lane, speed limit is 30, I was doing about 25 and had some driver blaring their horn at me, I couldn't pull over to the left as there was a stream of traffic, and pulling over to the right would be dangerous. So because the motorist missed out on 5mph of speed for 100m or so, I got 10 seconds of horn.
I had a right mind to slow down to 10mph or so and hold him up longer.

My cycling road position is defensive/aggressive. It has to be. Too close to the curb would probably end in an accident as cars try to bully past (incidentally it is this meek positioning of cyclists that causes quite a few accidents).

If this means I'm holding traffic up because of my speed then tough. I'm traffic and the few minutes wait won't kill those behind me.

Your normal side street (not the real narrow ones though more like the suburban ones)) kind of road with parked cars on both sides. Moving over would put me in danger from car doors and pedestrians stepping out.

For some reason people just don't feel they should have to wait for cyclists. Tractors, horses, steam engines, old cars...pas de problemes.

Cyclist? FORGET IT BUDDY

I almost got mowed down by a cyclist this lunch time on my walk. I go down this private road from the office to the main road, the road has a 15 mph speed limit with humps that make it impossible for cars to go above 10mph for fear of scratching the bumper. This guy must have been doing at least 30-40mph down the hill - how he managed it over those bumps I don't know but he was damn quick.

Also, what's the point of a few strips of polystyrene for a helmet if you're going to be doing those sorts of speed? Might as well not bother imo.

Idiot cyclist but what were you doing walking in the middle of the road?

Regarding helmets, it does make a difference, obviously. They're not just lumps of polystyrene glued together by a school child. Which do you think is better...helmet or no helmet?

I was crossing it - looked both ways, saw cyclist a long way away in the distance so crossed, only just made it to the other side before I heard him whizz past.

After listening to the Jeremy Vine show last week, I don't know. A report was quoted saying cyclists would be better protected wearing a skirt and a long hair wig :)

Technically they're both in the wrong, he should have slowed down when he saw that the she had made a massive error with her overtaking. Fact is though, if she was a decent driver the situation wouldn't have arose.
I agree with you (i already stated this in post #273)

Also in reaction to "you clearly don't drive often", she clearly doesn't cycle often as forcing a cyclist to compensate for her mistake by slowing down is really annoying for the cyclist. Acceleration consumes a lot of energy.
It was a response to "I've never seen a car slow down to let someone overtake them.", which is obviously nonsense hence the 'clearly you don't drive often'

The fact is, both cyclists and motorists have the same rights to be on the road. He may not appreciate that "these things happen" from the point of view of the motorist, but she also doesn't appreciate that "these things happen" from the point of view of the cyclist.
spot on, but this is apparently all the motorists fault rather than looking at both sides and accepting some responsibility.
Just look at half the responses in this thread (ignoring the ones who just want to troll)

what if one of those cyclists fell under your wheels after the horn and died or got handicapped for the rest of his life? would it be as fun? idiot.
it would be hilarious in a comedy sketch now you mention it, you know.. considering it was a joke...

And look, none of the cyclists here are condoning this video (apart from the OP). In fact some of you are praising it and stating how good it is. It's idiotic. The community (cyclists) should speak up to stamp out these things for the good of all people that use the roads and pavements. That 'race' is a menace and does nothing for the view of cyclists. Likewise, people in this thread that are saying that they love it are just as daft.

There's a reason people dislike cyclists, and this video proves why. They are moronic inconsiderate pain in the rears and the community as a whole does nothing to curb this.

Thats quite an amazingly idiotic post there mate. Maybe I should pop up a video of illegal street racers in their cars as an argument against people in cars.

There is a very simple reason why cyclists are not as dangerous as cars. Because they are not over a ton of metal that can go over 100mph! People in cars act like ***** to cyclists and vice versa; difference is that a car will kill a cyclist very easily and a cyclist will hardly ever kill someone in a car.

On my bike, literally every ride over a mile, I will have someone in a car overtake when they shouldn't, overtake too close, cut me up or plain ignore the fact im coming and pull out in front of me. When I am in a car I see very few cyclists causing problems.

Maybe all the people who claim that cyclists are causing all the issues should get off their fat arses and cycle on our roads and maybe you will have a new found appreciation for cycling. The roads are dangerous enough with all the pot holes, lack of cycle lanes and pedestrians walking into the road because they can't hear a car coming.

Same here. Re: your previous point overtaking cars, this happens far too frequently. Some motorists seem to think that because a cycle will physically fit in a tight space that you should cycle in that space, i.e. when overtaking cars there's usually just about enough space for a cyclist to practically clip the wing mirrors of the cars being overtaken and for the motorist to come the other way at the same time.

I had a kind of similar case on a single track country lane the other week. I'm riding one way, 4x4 coming the other on a straight bit of a road (no excuse not to have seen me). He drives past a designated passing place and then expects me to shuffle past the tiny gap next to him when he slams on the brakes right in front of me

There is no "Right of way" just because the road is obstructed by parked cars. If you go thinking its your right of way, and you cause an accident, you can be held accountable.

But saying that, the mini driver does sound like a bit of a ****

Yep, standard fare really. If you are coming down a street with cars on the other side of the road and you are halfway down it they will still come head on and either come past you within a whisker or suddenly stop infront of you when they realise there is not enough room.

What really really ****es me off though is the rudeness of people in cars. If you get into the side to let them past, I would say that at least 50% don't even acknowledge that you are there or have let them through. Makes me want to take their wing mirrors off and beat them with it until they get some manners.

So you didn't judge his speed correctly, is this his fault?

From what he said, the road was a limited speed zone which applies to any and every vehicle so the cyclist was in the wrong. Im not going to lie, I will go faster than 10 miles an hour down those roads but anywhere there is a chance that someone could pop out or there could be any danger i will slow down just to be safe.
