And this is why I would jump on the pavement. Namely, to avoid such an idiot running me over or clipping me as he impatiently tries to rage past me.

If you feel the need to use both the road (where you belong) and the pavement (where you don't) then you should dismount your bike and walk with it along the pavement until you decide to return to the road. The pavement isn't meant for cyclists, so don't cycle on it.

If there are too many pedestrians for me to cycle safely, then I dismount and walk until I can ride again. If the path is nominally clear, then I see no need to dismount and will not do so. Likewise, I am not 'walking' my bike for upwards of a mile if I cannot use the road due to conditions and the pavement is a viable alternative.

Either, you want me to ride soley in the road and thus hold up traffic, or you don't. Which is it?

I'll happily pay a form of road tax and insurance when EVERY road in the UK has a cycle lane.
And a maintained one at that, amen :).

However - can you imagine the complaints from motorists when the cost of their insurance, council tax and ved is significantly increased to cover these costs?

I'd love to see one day a month - to begin with - a 'car-free' policy encouraging people to either walk or ride to where they need to. It would be a fantastic experience to actually have roads not only largely free from traffic, but the peace and quiet that would go with it; no more cars whizzing by making everyone feel rushed.

Logistics and people with health reasons of course would be excluded.

Incidently, did anyone see that 'dream bike' programme on the BBC a couple of weeks ago? That town/city in the USA where everyone opts to ride as opposed to drive was definitely inspirational.

I think Paris has been doing that for a while.

Not that Jimz will read this thread again because, much like his driving, he's just driven past quickly in a fit of rage, but:

Section 63 of the highway code: "Use of cycle lanes is not compulsory and will depend on your experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer."

Stupid cyclists, just stay off the roads. If there is a path next to the road USE IT.

However if there is a Special Cycle Lane, fair play thats Perfectly fine. Use them as much as you want.
