D600 with full fat AF system!

I think Nikon are trying their luck, which is why I also expect prices to tumble. Not that I care too much anyway as the spec's are a bit of a turn off. If it was a FF D7000 then I would be interested, but it's more like a FF D6000.

EDIT - that's currently £1715.00 for body only. Not a million miles away from early estimates actually. Still; very top end of what anyone expected and body only. Not even a kit lens!

You can get a UK D800 for £2175. Personally I think you would have to be nuts to pay £1715 for a MUCH lesser camera.

Well according to Amazon D800 RRP is £2600.
It's selling for much less than that now.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-D800-Digital-Camera-Body/dp/B00763MHB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347462880&sr=8-1

Nikon doesn't leave much margin for retailers, so it's unlikely that retailers will be able to offer better prices on the D600 until Nikon realises that the D600 isn't selling and issues credit notes to dealers to be able to Discount it.

If Nikon hasn't done that for the D800, then Amazon would now be selling the D800 at a loss.

Considering the D800 does 5FPS in 1.2x crop at 20something MP, and the D600 only does 5.5FPS I don't know what your issue is tbh.

If the D600's AF isn't as good then the usable FPS will likely be lower than the D800.

At full resolution 4fps for a camera body that costs £2,500. That's my problem.

Also note, I wasn't asking anyone to agree with me. I was expressing my feelings on the matter, is all.

Oh and we don;t have any confirmation on the frame rate of the D600. It's all speculation.

If your shooting sports or wildlife, why would you need to use full size of the sensor?
And don't worry I don't agree with you, it's a non issue imo...

Regarding the Ninja Edit, the rumoured FPS is 5.5. so that's what I'm basing my comments on.

Tbh I'm not interested in machine gunning anything, which is probably why I have no interest in photographing football and the like, I don't see what's artistic about chasing people around in your viewfinder, letting the camera track focus and machine gunning the subject.
I don't mind some motor sports though, in fact I love the artistry of Darren Heath's work, but that's an exception rather than the rule.

You are right, I am not a pro sports tog but I am friends with some and follow a few pro togs and I listen to what they say.

besides which i cannot follow your math at all here. lets say there is a particular event to photograph (someone crossing a finishing line. there is a 0.5seocnd window of opportunity, by raw number a 6FPS camera might capture 3 frames and a 4 FPS camera 2 frames, but if the AF system on the 6FPS camera failed then one might have 3 out of focus photos while the 4 FPS camera has 2 perfectly in focus photos. Ever pro sports tog on the planet will prefer 2 perfectly focused photos of a critical event than any number of failed photos. Hence raw FPS is not of critical important, AF performance tracking ability, consistency etc if more important.

there is also the issue of filling the buffer too quickly at high speeds, which is a problem if you machine gun away. Given the same buffer size and a slower shooting rate will cause less problems here, which is one of the main reasons camera have both a continuous High and low speeds because sometimes the low speeds are more useful (although on the pro bodies the buffer is usually sufficient, on some lower end bodies that have high FS the buffer will fill very rapidly).

I think Rojin is basically saying all else being equal, more FPS = Better - and can make a big difference.

Obviously in this particular case of D600 Vs D800, I'm with you DP.
5.5FPS of the D600 is only an advantage over the D800 if it's AF has the same hit rate. As it is a less capable AF system it is unlikely to perform as well as the D800, thus in real use the D800 may provide more usable frames in a given moment.

Personally I couldn't understand why anyone would buy this and not pay a couple extra £XXX for the D800.

I just hope it's the D600 that will get cheaper, and not the D800 that will get more expensive.

My hunch was Nikon messed up with the pricing/demand for the D800 and doesn't want to make the same mistake with the D600.

If the D600 lowers in price towards the £1600/1700 mark, will you buy one of those over the D800 due to needing two bodies?

If it was that price at launch, I'd probably seriously consider one as long as the weather sealing is good, but the current price is just too similar to the D800 to justify buying one over the bigger model.

1/4000 stops me buying the D600. I'll just wait longer and get either 2x D800 or 1x D800 + 1x D800E or 2x D800E (probably 2x D800E).

I was planning to upgrade my camera's in December with a an extra wedding commission that I might get and that wasn't planned for. But instead I think I will use that money to take a photography trip to a small island in Thailand.

It would be cheaper to Fly to America and buy a D600 and Fly back with it hidden down my nickers then buy in the UK, I'd rather buy a second hand D700, Lets face it the D700 is enough really, Unless you're blowing pictures up to 30".

Tbh images still look stunning on my 30" monitor. I think prints could go way bigger if needed.

What res is that though, 2560X1600? That's way below what you're looking at for decent 300dpi prints. A 15x10" is 4500x3000.

Yes 2560x1600, which is approx 50% magnification with D700 files.
I remember seeing a comparison somewhere that showed DPI really doesn't need to be 300dpi to get quality prints. I also remembered reading a comparison of the D700 5dii prints that said the difference was minor.

Also on the 1/4000 front, with the base ISO dropping to 100 then it shouldn't really be any different to your D700 with a base of 200?

It depends on the highlight recovery of the sensor. For instance the D7000 has much more overall DR than my D700. Yet from what I remember my D700 can recover much more highlight detail than the D7000.

If the D600 has a similar amount of highlight detail recovery as a D7000, then it would actually be worse than my D700.

Also part of the reason for me to upgrade bodies is to get to native ISO100. 1/4000 kills that benefit for me.
