Well, it's been announced...

DPReview Hands-on Preview http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/13/Nikon-D600-preview

We haven't had long with the D600 but it's hard not to be impressed. There are two ways of looking at the new model as it sits within Nikon's current lineup - as a beefed-up D7000, or as a slimmed-down D800. Both are equally valid. The D600 offers a highly compelling entry into full-frame for D7000 owners (not to mention D300/S owners...) but it also offers an awful lot of DNA from the D800 at a considerably lower price, making it attractive to people who were holding out for a D800 price-drop or just want a cheaper FX-format second body alongside a D800 or D4.

Nikon should be commended for not skimping on features in order to keep the D600's costs down or protect sales of more expensive models. We've seen all of this spec before, but the cameras we've seen it in have been impressive products. The D600 might have 12 fewer AF points than the D800, but it offers the same AF system as the D7000, which we know performs really well. Its sensor has 12 million fewer pixels than the D800, but it still beats or rivals anything else out there in terms of pixel count, and we have no reason to expect image quality to be a weak point.

As far as handling is concerned, the D600 is extremely similar to the D7000, with the addition of a redesigned live view switch. As such, anyone used to shooting with that model (or a D800, and to a lesser extent the D4) will find everything pretty easy to find. The D600 is a bigger camera than the D7000, but not by much. Compared to the D800, the D600 is noticeably lighter, which will make a difference during a long day's shooting. In theory, the D600 will stand up to the same sort of abuse from wind and weather as the D800, too.

Is it what you guys expected? I personally thought it was going to be announced at a lower price, but maybe I was mistaken. Either way, pretty damn exciting!

Personally I couldn't understand why anyone would buy this and not pay a couple extra £XXX for the D800.

I just hope it's the D600 that will get cheaper, and not the D800 that will get more expensive.

My hunch was Nikon messed up with the pricing/demand for the D800 and doesn't want to make the same mistake with the D600.

The Nikon D800 Body only can already be had here for £1790 (2700 CHF, Swiss Francs) online... so the D600 needs to undecut that significantly to be a success here http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_265667.html

I'm thinking the price here in Switzerland will end up around £1200-£1300 (1890CHF) after a couple of weeks when all has settled.

If they has the same AF as the D7000 does this mean it will suffer the same problem of the 5DII in that the AF points barely cover much of the frame?

There's only 250 odd quid between the actual street price for this and the D800. Why bother getting the D600 at all?

I am quite surprised, i expected the street price to be nearer 1500.

Probably but it's hardly a big deal people have been shooting professionally with the 5d mkii AF for years and producing amazing results. The question is about compromise and if this AF arrangement is too much of a compromise for you then you have the option to spend the extra money on the D800 which has a wider spread of AF points.

I really stuggle to understand the AF point arguments, yes it's nice to have loads but not essential it's kind of like everyone got bored of the mega pixel race and now we have the AF point race to replace it.

Aye, that's what I was getting at. :)

I must be missing something, because every where I'm reading about the D600 has rave reviews and comments about it, save the usual complaining about the difference between US and UK price.

Except here...

People have been producing amazing results with no autofocus at all for decades so I don't really understand your argument. Anyway, the only small point I was making is that sticking an AF system originally designed for an APS-C camera into a full frame camera leaves a lot of space around the frame, so if you're coming from an APS-C camera you won't be able to compose your shots in the same way because the AF points won't be there.

It's not about number of points or quality of the AF system, it's just about their spread across the frame.

I think here everyone seems to be happy with the specs, but just annoyed about the high UK RRP. However I think it's a safe bet (hopefully) that actual retail cost will be lower after release.:)

Can someone from the UK buy from a swiss store though and get it imported without being charged extra? The D800E is roughly £2180 over there going by the info on the same site :S Far cheaper than over here (nearly £500 saving)
