Dad of the year

In answer to your other post :p

Anybody doing any considerable more speed than the rest of the traffic is an idiot, because as you said all it takes is for someone to move out without looking, which happens a HELL of a lot, then your screwed!
Ill admit I used to speed quite a lot when I first had my bike, but I was never stupid enough to do stupid speeds with others about thats just asking for trouble on a bike, when I speed I know im only risking myself, but now do track days so road riding is really boring now :p, and hardly speed anymore than your usual bmw/audi motorway cruiser speeds :p

You were coming towards the end of a carriageway and was doing 35 over the limit, i was doing 15 over the limit on a 4 lane stretch of the M1

That's the point I'm trying to make, if a car doing 70 pulls in front of a car doing 120, it would be almost the same as a car doing 50 hitting a stationary car. Either way it's not going to end well.

lol, this takes me back to when my dad used to take me out on the back of his FZ600 lol - great days, hooning to the seaside in a day, having chips with me old boy at the seaside and hooning back. Remember one day we came over a little hump-back bridge (near the rolls royce plant in Ansty if anyone knows it?) and carried a bit too much speed, lifted over the hill and bottomed out on t'other side, with a bit of a wobble and a planted throttle. loved them days, always look back on them with fond memories.

had my dad been jaoiled i'd have been devastated.

Somethings not right with that video though.....look at his lean angle as he went around the corner - no way was that over the speed limit. So I'm assuming he braked for the corner - hard to tell from the video if his brake light is on. I dont pretend to understand how those laser guns work, but at the moment the 122 flashes up he's actually slowed right down, so do they take an average reading over a short distance?

The numbers bandied about just don't seem to correlate with the video clip is all.

totally agree without a doubt hes not doing 122mph in that clip i can only assume that the road is straight just before that clip and this is where he was doing the high speed, maybe the comera shows the highest speed recorded..?

as for the rider........hes an idiot for not equiping his son with decent gear......hes a pillok for opening it up that much in those conditions......hes unlucky for being caught.

that all said.....he deserves heavy fine yes........he deserves a ban yes......he deserves a prison sentance on the facts given, no way, but i bet theres more to this than is being reported as is normally the way with news stories they are written to over dramatise the situation.

I think you are right. He must have had history or something at least.

I bet the bikers that did 147 and gave the finger to the camera didnt get 6 months.

Edit:- talking of history, how on EARTH did this happen...

122mph aint fast. Only takes about 5 seconds to get there on a hirebus and about 5 seconds to get back to 0 again.
I love some of the comments in this thread. I guess none of your bike-hating car-drivers have ever broken the speed limit with passengers or children in your car.

6 months is a stupidly harsh sentance.

It's apparent that bikers don't see this as being unacceptable.

Not at all. We just think 6 months in choky is a bit harsh.
We also object to the "holier than thou" attitude that seems to exude from the non bike riding members of this forum. However, that attitude is prevelant with the vast majority of non-bikers. It's kinda a form of prejudice I guess. "Don't understand therefore it must be BAD".

People don't like motorcycles because they view normally safe riding as being dangerous due to the difference in FoV you get in a car compared to on a bike.

Not saying this guy was safe. 122mph in the wet with a passenger isn't clever but it's by no means "stupidly fast".

Yes, I agree, but this is why I have a 365mm 6 Pot setup on the front.

Shame those awful big breaks cant do anything about your thinking distance and your ability to re-act. Who knows by the time you go to hit the breaks it may well be too late. I get the feeling whatever your given for your punishment isnt going to stop you pushing your and another persons luck abit too far.

Irrelavent how capable your machine is. When you crash, 122mph is 122mph.

As a matter of fact not really no, I make a point of driving sensibly with passengers in.

Bit different in a car though, for a start. Although no I wouldn't do 122 with a kid in the car. In fact I wouldn't do 122 period. I think six months is reasonable. Having a kid on the bike is a major aggravating factor when considering sentencing.

Quite interesting that my sisters b'friend took me over the IOM TT course many years ago on the back of his GSXR thou, touching 160mph indicated at points, which was perfectly legal, wouldn't of even got a ticket let alone thrown in jail.

My step dad always used to take me out every weekend, and when it was safe used to get up to and beyond those kind of speeds. I don't know the circumstances, but it it was a stright bit of road and no traffic then jail time is harsh in my eyes.

Watch the video - it wasn't straight and it wasn't even a dual carriageway or motorway, it was a two way road with traffic coming the other way.

Doesnt matter how big your brakes are, the thinking distance increases too with speed remember...

As for it only takes a second to get there.

So what? You ride the bike accordingly knowing how fast it is and the speeds its capable of. I dont drive my car like I drive my van, it doesnt require full throttle to get up the hills on the M62 if i tried it then I would be doing well over a ton in a relativly short space of time.

I'm brilliant, I have a super fast car and exceptional reactions so this thread is full of fail and not worthy of my epicness. For what it's worth the bloke was a tit and should have got his hand slapped but 6 months does seem a bit rich......though my reactions would have allowed me to go invisible and I have 20 pot 400INCH brakes.
