Danny Baker sacked

You may well know that, if you heard it somewhere before and were interested enough that you remembered it. But would you have looked at her cold and thought she was mixed race or gone out of your way to consider her facial features?

No, to be honest if I looked at her I wouldn't think she was of mixed heritage but I have never felt the need to tweet about the Royals either. Baker did, so I assume he has considerably more interest in their goings on than I do.

...but couldn't help but read or overhear conversation about her being mixed race. On here, in the news, general chit chat etc, no needing to go out of your way to find out about it.

But here is the issue! Why is it even a thing newsworthy in the first place????!!! Who feels the need to have conversations about it in everyday life???!!!

Its racism, or fear of racism in some perverted way that actually makes things worse.

The media are so keen to point out these things I believe it is them, and others like them, that causes these issues in the first place.

She's mixed race, her mother is black.

Is it just me or is Harry staring at the mums ****?

You're reading too much into it, I had never heard of Kate Middleton either before she dated William and then I heard everything about her and her family.

The media interest in them is because it's the Royals, mentioning Meghans heritage is just a detail of that story, especially since its a first in two or three areas (mixed race, American, divorced) not the reason for the story.

So no, it's not racism for the news to report the details of who she is, just as they did with Kate, Diana and every other significant royal member.

The guy posted a picture on twitter, people pointed out the potentially racist undertones which could be associated with it so he removed the tweet. It seems a bit harsh to lose your job over it. Where exactly do we draw the line when it comes to risking offending people with a random image?

I mean the President of the USA literally accused a percentage of Mexican migrants of being drug dealers, criminals and rapists yet he's still in charge of the most powerful country in the world.

Ridiculous. He may well not like the royals or not like the attention they get in the media or whatever, but that does not mean he knows everything about them. Maybe he did hear it once but it wasnt something worth remembering.

Not sure why you are hypothesising when he has said of course he knew.

I did ask earlier if that had been confirmed as wasnt sure. It seemed to me people were assuming he would or should know.

Personally i think it is racist if the media point out things about race in their stories about the royals. If people werent racist, then why would they need to know this detail and why would it matter. Racism is not the issue here its nosy people and the media feeding frenzy that always happens.

Because it's just a piece of information about her, you really are going to hyperbolic levels to say that even mentioning her heritage is racist.

Something is racist if it's being used in a negatively stereotypical and pejorative way, not just by mentioning a fact.

I never considered the rock's race either tbh. just thought he was american as he is a holywood guy. There is so much ethnic variation in movies and american actors that its just the norm now and goes unnoticed to me. Some people make a point of noticing and it is they who are racist or at least trying to exhibit positive discrimination.

lol

Its unfortunate his employers felt the need to sack him over that image, I don’t believe for a second he put it up with racial intent or any thought for the racist connotations people would jump on as that would be idiotic , once this was pointed out he removed the image

I feel an apology from him and bit of education would have been appropriate

But mentioning the fact draws attention to it and allows those who are racist to use it to meet their objective, and those who are do goody politically correct types to also use it to their advantage. Better for everyone to just not know or care, because she shouldnt be treated any differently either way.

That's not really a defence - he quite clearly shouldn't be.

Even if he didn't mean it to be racist, he was definitely an idiot for positing it nevertheless.

I don't see why employers should have to keep idiots in their employment.

If he posted it innocently poking fun at the royals without realising the racial connotations people would jump on he’s just ignorant , if he had any idea that it could in any way be construed as racist then he would be an idiot for posting it, but if that was the case I doubt he would ever have posted it as it would harm his career

If employers got rid of all their idiots then half the country would be out of work heh

My goodness still arguing about whether it’s right to be fired over it.

It is.

Solved it for you, they’re a corporate entity at the end of the day and their image must be squeaky clean. It doesn’t matter if you, plebeian #6268655765 care, unless your complaint helped get him fired.
