DAoC Origins

Why could OSI or EA never do this for Ultima Online?

For years and years 1000's of players pestered them for a 1997 rule set server, but they refused.
.

IIRC the official reasons are
1: No two players can ever seem to decide exactly what publish they want for a UO classic server* (there were a lot of major bugs at launch, and fixes weren't always documented individualy).
2: I think it's been mentioned a few times that they don't have the original server code in an easily usable format any more** (it was 11 years ago, for a game expected to run for under a year).
3: What they do have is very poorly documented (see 2) and with from memory only one of the original staff still available.
4: It would mean supporting yet another client - the server/client code has changed enough that you wouldn't be able to use the current clients without either major work to make them backwards compatible (possibly breaking the compatibility with the main servers) or doing a lot of work on the server to make it compatible with the modern client (see 2 and 3).

It sounds like Mythic are listening to the old players, and willing to give the classic DAOC a go, although I suspect if it doesn't pay for itself it won't last long.
It's certainly an interesting idea, i wonder how it'll go.

*A while back i think one of the UO devs did ask what people considered a classic server, and practically no two people agreed (some wanted classic but with the bugs removed, some wanted classic but with some of the early publishes, some wanted classic rules with bugs removed and newer areas etc).

**IIRC the server code was a mess, and they've spent years documenting it as they've made changes (often finding out how one thing works only when it's stopped working due to a change elsewhere:p), and it's been altered several times to work on newer hardware (I remember in about '04 that the devs were trying to untangle it)

It wouldn't have worked. Just look at the biggest old school private shard aka Hybrid. I and a few friends gave up there because it was just 90% reds. Couldn't get a thing done on the shard unless you were in a large guild.

Like everyone says, SI killed Daoc for the most part. I doubt a Classic server will work long term wise but I hope it does. It would be nice to return to the old lands again but leveling to 50 again....urgh.

What!? SI didn't kill DAoC, its peak was the last patch prior to ToA... It was the most balanced, fun and playable PvP MMO ever at that stage. God I miss those days!

ToA is what killed DAoC for all intents and purposes, then it died a little bit more each major patch (NF) and expansion.

I remember you both well! It's great to see some names from way back then :)

Is Blej still pink? :D

Always good to see old names hanging around indeed!

As for Blej, haha - he's now traded pink in favour of Bright Red/Orange - he's a Bright Wizard :p

I think MMO's are a time-investment and i always look to a longer term playing them than a normal game. They also have a certain shelf-life, after which some redesign is needed. I can't see this causing an expansion in the game population long-term or having the possiblity of future improvements. It will peak initially like someone said, but will almost certainly not be able to maintain those numbers for any reasonable amount of time.

As such, it would be like linvesting money in a company who has released a new design of CRT monitors - Would be handy as a cheap stand-in product, but it's been done before and you need to take what was right and build on it. Also at the same time, the company has developed something else designed to replace it - WAR.

I think at the end of the day they will go with the concensus and pick a ruleset/expansion that the majority want. I for one can't wait, I mean yes the levelling will be a little boring, but the end result will hopefully be worth it with great RvR and 3 way battle going off all over the place.

./me youtubes for DAoC RvR.... :)

That's the issue, it hasn't, there isn't enough DAoC in WAR for my liking so I will be giving Origins a bash. And better still you can get a combined WAR/DAoC reduced subscription so everyone's a winner :)

Yeh, a lot of people getting bored. I've done my share of keep raids now, but how long can they last? I take two one night, retake them the next, and the next...

Thanks heavens they are increasing open RvR XP, because it's a spam fest, lagging, zerg at the moment with little incentive. Oh and for a healer, yeh thanks for the roll, all healers last place? Nice going :)

Loved the idea of DaoC, just never heard of it til a while later when i had already worked my way through 4 other MMO's.

WAR lacks the community, the tactics, the incentives, the atmosphere. Lots of things to do (great) with no one wanting to do them (overwrites the great).

Here are my RvR vids if any of you are interested!

Gamevee as lets face it, youtube quality blows! :(

I'm not sure about that because in my time when I played DAoC on US Server Merlin I always heard people saying how PvP and the game in general was way better back in the day etc..

Hmm the game hardly stole anything from you mate sry :p
Quite, but what happened on the classic servers they did the other year is probably what'll happen again.. those same people will go in, level a perfect group to 50 with perfect outfits, inside of a week, then start moaning like crazy when they can't find enough people with equal equip to compete with, leave, then everyone else will leave too.

Oops, I meant ToA too. Strangely enough Artifacts on Ultima Online completely killed my interest in that game as it did in Daoc too.

Blimey, that takes me back :)

Piojo and Bfr were both my ex clan-mates from Greenpeace Keepers, bloody good players. I still remember the "Lourker Chain" and the ****** Midget Mafia. Happy days :)

Hib/Pryd forever! :p

Woot, who were you in GPK? :D If I remember right you guys joined the alliance I formed with Malev and co, "Nature's Eye". :) Yeah Piojo joined my guild Order of the Illuminati, then went on to Eclipse just like myself. :) Pio is still kicking around as is Bfr, didn't quite manage to convince Bfr to join WAR yet, but early days! ;)

Hehe aye, I struggled through templating with artis and MLs on my RR10 Eldritch and RR8 Blademaster in ToA, then wrought havoc on RvR for a while with our guild group... then NF came along and pretty much ruined it. I think I would have stayed a lot longer if it wasn't for NF though. After all the PvE was over with in ToA, the RvR started to really hot up again, then NF just killed it. Ah well. I stayed for about 3 weeks post-NF, but that was it, so I wasn't even around to see the clustering.

We did indeed join Natures Eye (something you've just reminded me of :) ). I was Mortak, a Nature Drood. I didn't do much RvR until my last few weeks; it was my first MMO and PvP was still a bit daunting back then. Towards the end I used to run with Trelawney Hope (with whom I moved onto Planetside, where he continued to own).

I remember Malev, and Jamie, and Furball, and Droooood Dude, halcyon days :)

/edit: What server are you on in WAR? I've seen an Eclipse guild on Eltharion and always wondered if it was you ...
